I have been building amps for myself since the '80s. If it is a common vintage Fender or Marshall design, it is easy and fairly cheap to build a great sounding repro. There are a lot of resources and parts available that match the quality of the originals.
In the case of the Badcat, I believe those are true point to point amps with a strong VOX AC30 lineage. They don't usually use negative feedback so the transformer, component selections and layout are going to be very important to the end result.
Whenever I have built an amp, my goal was for it to sound good. If it did, and did not sound just like the original, SO MUCH THE BETTER!!
