Amp combo night; Marshall, Diezel, Mesa Boogie.

Tonight was f**kin fun guys. It was Brian lespaul1981's idea and we went for it. Spent an hour or so combining amps to hear different sounds.

Amps used;
Marshall 1971 Super Tremolo 100 watt with the Dave Friedman Kitchen Sink Mod (EL34)
Marshall 1976 JMP MKII 100 watt with the Dave Friedman Kitchen Sink Mod (6550)
Diezel VH4 (2008)
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 2 Channel Racto

Very good sounds. The VH4 and '71 Marshall Super Tremolo in Friedman HBE was ridiculous. I start rhythm tracks in the morning on this hard rock record, I'm starting with that combo straight out of the gate. I'm so happy with my amp rig, I've never had such a solid force of heavy amps before. Anyway, here you go this is for you guys, the moto of the day, 'Nobody said tone was cheap':

Where have you been?

Combining amps is fun until you get sick of dealing with so many tracks when mixing. I've moved back to one amp boat, not worth the headache for me.

The cool thing about the VH4 is that you can combine it with anything & it will sound good, if it's not ch3 then it's ch4, if ti's not ch4 then it's ch2. One of them always blends just right.

I hear ya but some of the best sounds I've gotten is with combinations of amps. Less performances with bigger sounds, very tight and big. I've sat in with Matt Hyde, one of LA's best rock producers at getting great guitar sounds. That guy runs so many amps simultaneously it's crazy, Metallica Black album style.
 
Definitely! I've gotten the best tones combining amps too, but as I said before the amount of extra work wasn't worth it for me. If you still have your Herbert try mixing CH2- with VH4. Very nice sound can be had from this combo. I did also like these 2 mixed for clean sounds.
XTC 101B mixed with VH4 rivals for rock tones, be it clean or dirty. I'm surprised you don't have a 101b.
 
Wow the Diezel VH4 & Mesa Dual Rec (2 ch) sounded massive It had huge clarity and grind from the boogie Almost the Recto "Clack" and the diezel fillied in the warmth by far my favorite.

To me amp combining makes it easier and quicker. What I love is less performances to achieve the massive sound. The less performances makes the tone tighter and for me makes it go quicker, I can set up and phase a group of amps in minutes and then every time I track it's like 2 or 3 times through the song depending on how many amps I blend. I've personally done as many as 4 but 2 is usually my drug of choice.
 
If you like such a massive sound what are you sitting there with V30s for? Get some EVM12Ls. :D
 
Last night was a great time! The tones James got with his amps were outstanding. The VH4 and 71 Friedman Marshall was the ticket for hard rock/metal. It was so damn perfect I lost all my senses of rhythm and timing! :rock: My other favorite blends were the VH4 and 76 as well as the 71 and 76 friedman marshalls together. I loved the idea of having the marshalls doing the classic kick ass hard rock tone with killer midrange while the VH4 filled up the mix in a very modern way. It was all right there from the first chords played. From what I remember the VH4 and 76 got a pretty nasty Alice in Chains "Dirt" album type of tone. While the 71 and 76 made me want to play velvet revolver, stp and gnr. I could ramble on forever but bottom line is blending amps is the way to go if you got the toys to do it. Tone sure as hell ain't cheap but when we a/b'd the vh4 and 71 friedman we die young riff to the original recording of it, it was right there competing with it. Our take of it was more vicious and evil while the original seemed brighter and more piercing. Anyways.......
Thanks again James, as well as Dave and Peter for creating tone monsters! Time to head down to Santa Monice blvd to make the 4g's......... :lol: :LOL:

I was fooling around with 3 a bit and found 2 does it for me most of the time.

Mixing one of the big bass modern voiced amps with a a more vintage English crunch voice is where it's at for me.

I know when I plugged in my THD Flexi and Glory Hog's Einstein that was a great sound.
 
James, have you played with the VH4 channel 2 ? you can get a very nice vintage MArshall sound out of it.

try it and let me what you think, specially since you have two killer MArshalls to compare it to.

Oh yeah, very nice. Dan that works here really likes it, it suits his playing style.

We just listened to the clips agaianst the original We Die Young, cool.
 
i wanna try run two amps at once, my buddies gonna bring around his amp to jam soon. how do i go about doing this? what do i need?

2 amps, two cabs or a stereo cab, something to split the signal after the guitar before the front end of the amps. I use a pedal with stereo outs with the effect off. Try to find a pedal that does not color the sound. A (passive Y splitter) well also work for this.
 
I watched the vid over at Metro amps. The VH4 and Marshall sounded great. I'd like to try a VH4 someday.

You want to lift the ground of one of the amps.
