Hey guys, i am playing and learning a bunch of hair metal tunes from Cinderella, Dokken, Ratt, etc... and was wondering if you all could throw ideas for amps out that would cover this ground well?

I have owned a JSX Combo and a Marshall JCM2000 50 before, the Marshall did not work for me for the stuff I record but it may work for rhythm stuff.

Any thoughts? Somewhat price conscious. I'm asking here instead of TGP because I really don't want to deal with "buy this $18,000 boutique amp" to go play Ratt tunes at a bar somewhere.

Thanks,

Jeff

For around 1k you could get a Soldano Avenger or one of the Hot Rod's.

If it's still for sale, this. With a TS-type boost, this will go from basic 80's hair to 80's thrash, with an awesome clean channel to boot. Takes other OD/gain pedals really well, too. It's a 5881 amp, but will also take EH 6CA7's for even more 80's Marshally tones.

A used SLO with the depth mod if you have a few ducks to throw at it, a JCM800 and pedal for a slightly cheaper route.......... and a case of Aqua Net, an industrial grade fan, and enough cheap scarves to to shingle a house.....

Splawn Quickrod and Mesa Stiletto are two newer amps that will get you there without breaking the budget. An old JCM800 with boost, Laney AOR100 and Mesa Boogie Mark III/.50 Caliber are few reasonably priced old models that will do the job as well. An ADA MP1 or Marshall JMP1 with a good power amp will get you there too.

I have been looking at Splawns lately, it seems like they were made for what you are looking for.

Back to the OP's question:

80's hair metal = Soldano SLO or HR100+

its not hijacked cause your on topic so
email me

depends on what you want in an amp. They start at $1600 Rig Talk start point is $1400

hand wired by me in westminster CA

Checked out some of the recommendations today. The Splawns definetely would fit the bill, as would the Soldano and even the Surreal except I just dont have the cash for those. I watched the Demo on the Krank and was impressed. I liked the gain tone. I gotta sell my RG770DXLB first before I go amp shopping, the Krank guy needs PA stuff or I would have traded.

I say look at a Marshall JVM 205. Used, they've been seen going for $1200 and lower.
A used Peavey 5150 or 6505 is also always a possibility.
For what it's worth, I've been able to get nice hair metal tones from Mesa Single Rec's with an SD-1 boost. They go for between $800 and $1000 all day long on the used market.
I will also recommend a real sleeper amp which I own myself, the Laney GH50L. You can get them for $900-$1000 new or $400-$500 used.
50 watts, all tube, single channel Marshall eater.

I went thru a ton of amps on a TONE QUEST and the Peavey 5150 is a very good choice.
It can do the Hair Metal on the Crunch channel with EASE and sounds great.
Then the lead channel gets you into heavier territory if you chose.

All this for a ballpark of $400-$700 pending on what deal you stumble across. ;)

I am really having a blast with mine! :D

JCM800 - what they played in the 80s. So you can't really get more authentic than that.
Any of the Splawns will get you there in spades.
Peavey Classic 50
Peavey Butcher (the old school 80s model) JCM800 clone
Marshall JCM900 SLX
Rivera M-100 or M-60
Soldano Avenger or Hot Rod series
Sovtek Mig 100 - JCM800 clone
Laney AOR - JCM800 clone
ADA MP-1 with a Peavey Classic 60 (or 60/60 if you want stereo) power amp.

There are a ton of amps that will get you hair metal tones. I pull off some mean Cinderella and Ratt tones with my TriAmp. It's all in how you dial it in.

Splawn Quickrod FOR SURE

one of the best 80's type amps ever... I love mine

I have to agree. The 5150 is a killer deal for $400...heck I have seen them selling for $350 around me. So for $400 amp, another $400 for a cabinet and a simple delay pedal for the loop and a SD-1 out front, you have a KILLER rig for under $1,000. You don't have to spend big bucks to get a killer sound.

I said it above and agree with both you... 5150/6505 is indeed a good choice!

Pretty much anything with a chorus and reverb in the loop.
