So I'm joining a cover band for some extra dough... gotta support this gear habit somehow lol. The list of songs they gave me was very straight forward bar type stuff (straight rock/hard rock). Someone offered me a Mesa 4x10 for my avatar and Im thinking about the trade... If so.... What type of head would be a good match, not too much money, that would fit the bill for a cover gig. Something less than 100 watts preferably. Maybe a Jet City 20/50 watter? I dunno. Not a big Marshall fan though.

Clean tone issue... theres some "pretty" stuff on the list where i need a decent clean tone

Throw some "verb, alittle chorus, and some delay on the clean channel...You'd be surprised how "pretty" that can make any amp :D

hahaha!

A used 5150III should do nicely. Clean channel problem solved.

The bands we're covering are Blink 182, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Cold, Breaking Benjamin, SR71, Sum 41, Beyonce, Linkin Park, Big and Rich, Harvey Danger, Tonic, 3 Doors Down, Shinedown, Michael Jackson, Buckcherry, etc.

Used Laney Vh100R, should be able to cover anything you need and it has a great clean....

I sold my Laney Vh100R a number of years back for $650, so my guess would be they are $500-800 today. I see them used on the forums from time to time. There is a Laney GH100L in the classifieds right now, but to be honest I don't know much about those or how versatile they are.

If money is no object a Mesa Electrodyne. Otherwise perhaps a Carvin Legacy or Peavey Ultra. Both of those are sub $500.

Is your goal to as accurately as possible replicate the recorded tone? Or do you put your spin on each song? The answer to that should steer your amp purchase. I play AC-DC, Ozzy, Ceelo Green, Lady Gaga, Big and Rich, Orianthi, Greenday, Katy Perry, etc all with my Friedman modded Marshalls.

Remember, when you play live most people only notice clean and dirty sounds, not much else.

So.... I swapped the Avatar 4x12 for the Mesa 410AR. I played with it for a night and really didn't dig it for myself, I guess I'm not big on the 10" speaker thing. I sold the bass half stack and the Mesa last night and made enough $$$ to get the last 2 speakers I need for my Diezel Cab and snag the Line6 Vetta Combo amp. So far been playing w/ the Vetta and I really dig the amp models and ease of use. Gonna order 2 WGS Retro 30's for my cab now and keep smiling. Only problem is at 4:30pm the old lady across the hall from me filed a noise complaint for the 2nd time. The first time I was playing acoustic and this time I had the combo amp on 2... WTF.

Time to go talk to your neighbor. And apartments stink for playing music....
