Hey I found the screen resistors, I wonder what is the proper procedure to test them? Ive got a multimeter in hand now.

You can sometimes get a reading if the amp is drained of all power. I assume you want to see 1K on them. Select ohms on your meter.

Stick your tongue on it and see if the battery is dead ...

I've been recording all week with the Fender, I miss this Mesa even more.

I have just checked the screen resistors with the multimeter. 3 of them give the same reading, about 1.6k.

The third one is a different value resistor that us 56 ohms, and reads exactly 56 ohms on the multimeter.

Does this mean everything's good? The amp was working properly last time, just some strange odor.

Should I try to reassemble it and test it out, both sound and smell?

Thanks for everyone's input jacks and advice.

Does this amp have 4 power tubes? The one testing 56 ohms might be bad. It is hard to tell with the resistors in the circuit. The ones testing 1.6K sound right. Are you sure it wasnt just the tubes smelling? New tubes sometimes have an odor. Not usually strong though.

Yeah the amp has 4 power tubes, however that last resistor actually says 56 ohms on it so that must be OK I think. I've been using these tubes for a while now, I don't think they were the cause of this new radically different odor.

I tried recording with it yesterday but did not use that overkill tube pedal in front of it, and didn't notice the smell. The pedal was a fryette SAS. There might be some issue with it because when the volume of that pedal is down all the way, the output is still like 3-5 times louder than a normal pedal. It may have been this unit that did some burning. I won't be using that anytime soon.

I was definitely scared to turn the amp back on, but the recording came out very nice. It was on for at least 45 minutes with no issue or smell. Am I in the clear?

Does it sound ok? Do all of the power tubes get hot? I smelled something weird on my Mark IV and then it sounded a little off. After a few days I noticed one tube was cold while the others were hot. Turned out the screen grid resistor was burnt. Simple fix on that amp.

It only smells if Russian Hookers pee in your amp ...
