Amp sounds good one day - the next day not so good?

Has anyone else ever experience this? Most days my amps sound great - other days they sounds like shit! I've had this experience with every tube amp I've ever owned.

Bad electricity, inconsistent voltage.
A good voltage regulator on a tube amp is key

that stuff happens. The room, your mood, your playing...it all plays a factor. On days like that I just have to trust that its me..not the amp

thats why I like to have multiple amps, if one isn't doing it for me, I got a couple others to play.

Played the game for a while now, definately the ears change, sometimes day to day. I have been in love with something for months and then all of sudden things change again. If you can swing multiple amps, that's the way to get around it. Also speaker cabs can help you adjust for your ears moodines. It is a curse!!

I've always wondered if it's voltage, my mood or my ears, or environmental conditions like humidity that cause this to happen. I recorded a HD clip of my amp one day when I was REALLY diggin the tone, and I listened back right away and it was pretty spot on with what I was hearing in the room.

Listened to it a couple days ago...and did not like it AT ALL! I am certain now that it's just your mood/ears and how you perceive a sound in that moment that determines if you like what you're hearing. Just make a good recording and listen right away to make sure it is accurate, then take another listen in a couple weeks.

It's like when you love a guitar tone on a record, then you hear it years later and you hate it.  Or vise versa.

My amps always seem to sound better after a good workout. The exercise must clear the ear passages somehow.

Wall voltage, I definitely seem to have issues there.

I have stable power supplies to all my equipment, and it still happens
I just switch amps, as has been said, usually it works out

On days like that, I just end up playing without the amp. Either the electric guitar with nothing plugged in, or an acoustic. Just gotten too old to care, I guess. Which is a frightening thought, by the way, as I'm not that old

I've thought that too, but a good workout does other things to your body, the chemical balance in your body changes so that will affect not only your mood and optimism, but how you percieve sound.

Voltage? Definately.

You talking about those pesky tube gremlins?? Somebody has to do something about those guys... :gethim:

yup,

have experienced the same phenomenon. Apart from changing room positions or rooms all together, its hard to say if its just a case of ears changing that day, or if there is really something going on. Have heard a clip proving that a person's amp sounded different from day to day, while his case was more extreme, I think its possible. I have a hard time with it being totally just my ears, because sometimes there is something off, the feel, the sound. And then other days it just sounds and feels right. Stuff like my keyboards or synths never have off days, so not sure what to make of it all.

It's why Furman makes power conditioners and Glaxo-Smith-Kline make tranquilisers.

I also can relate with that frustration but just concentrate more on other things such as improving technique or coming up with new song parts that sound good to me. I haven't bought a new amp in a long time and have been satisfied with fairly simple gear, though partly out of necessity of having no funds while I was in school.

Sometimes it's the guitar. Check your tuning and setup. Things shift with humidity changes and I think tube amps are more transparent and really bring out those changes.

Spot on. And also always make sure the strings are fresh too!

I have the worst acid sweat and can eat through strings in one evening sometimes. When they really start getting corroded and worn, my tone turns to shit! After a cleanup and re-string, bingo! All good again
