Hi friends!

My tube amps (Cameron CCV 100, Marshall JMP 2203) are picking up radio signals. This happened on a session recently :( . Super embarrassing...

Anybody here know what I can do to eliminate this problem??

Thanks a lot!

Since it is happening to both amps, I would think nothing is wrong with the amps themselves. Has any large scale radio equipment been installed in the area that you know of, like a cell tower or a radio station?

What type of cable are you using, and have you tried different cables/ guitars to make sure something wierd hasnt happened to a pickup or the guitar cable. If the shielding has come disconnected from the 1/4 jack on the guitar cable, it can allow noise, interference, and possibly radio to enter the signal chain. A guitar cable once hooked up between the amp and guitar has a magnetic field which turns it into an antenna.

It could just be the power supply of the place you live, or where you live near.

usually a power issue or cable issue. Does it do it with different guitars too?

Yeah maybe it is the cables. That'd be GREAT if thats all it is. It has only ever happened with my Les Paul. It has an old JB in the bridge. So I should look specifically for shielded cables?

Thanks fellas! I appreciate your help here....

Turn down the gain :dunno:

Hangs head in shame, then signs off and goes to The Gear Page

Hey Doug!

It's not actually caused by your amps or guitars... I have the same problem all the time with all of my gear, when using it locally around here. If there are very strong radio frequencies in your area, it will find it's way into your gear and get amplified.

You can install a little .01uF Ceramic Disc capacitor inside your amps which should help. You just solder one end of the cap to the ground lug of your amp's input jack. The other end of the cap goes to the nearest chassis ground. If you want a diagram, i will happily email one over to you

Cheers,
Dan

A power conditioner is a huge help. This phenomenon has gone on since the days of Jimi. Back in the day in London my Marshall stack and DA Fuzz Face, I would get the police band shortwave just as Jimi experienced   at Isle of Wight. That RF can picked up by amps of any gain is true.
Filtering and regulating AC is key though eliminates a lot of garbage your tube amp can pick up.

Yes, +1 to what Dan said. Simple, no worries....well unless you live right next door to a transmitting tower...then you'll have to sell you house and move.

Cheers,
Mike
