I've finally had it with the Duncan JB (bridge position) in my alder horizon.
I really dig it in my Mahogany guitars, but I'm finding it too bright in a neck-through alder guitar.
I'm not too picky, but not interested in any "boutique" pickups (mainly due to the cost) so mainly dimarzio, duncan, etc alternatives.
Has to have an output level similar to the JB since It will have to do high-gain very well.
Any advice?
Thanks duderz

You sound like a good candidate for a sd distortion
Really?
I was under the impression that the distortion was brighter than the JB?

Try with 250k vol pot? Works in my alder strat. Worth a try. Much cheaper than a new pickup.

I haven't had any issues with brightness, but then again, you and I will adjust/eq our sounds differently.

As golf mentioned, going down to a 250k pot would be the cheapest route, and you may find that fits your needs

Aren't Dimarzio's commonly darker than the Seymour Duncan variants? Sounds like you want something darker.

Custom custom is one of my favorites. MCP does a nice take on it with the blister bucker and black iron.
Little squish to it, tons of mids and tames a bright guitar. Mid grindy pickup. I think the guys who hate it want something realitvly more scooped and punchy.
Of course totally depends on the guitars sound and what it wants in a pickup.

change the magnet in the JB to an alnico 2, will change the sound a lot ... cheap and easy

250k pot.
The JB was designed to be used with them.
The whole reason the JB gets a bad rap is because players use the wrong value pot.

Get nazgul ? Not too bright and low round mids... Should be ok with alder and maple ?

I had the same problem as you with my Alder Strat. I think the JB sounds better in a 250k and/or mahogany guitar.

I tried a few and finally settled on the DZ Norton (DP 160).

The SD custom was too bright
The Air Norton didn't have the punch to match my neck pickup
The Duncan Distortion had a little too much high end sizzle.

This exactly. Gotta try a 250k pot.

Try jb8

Try jb2. This is the demartini

The alnico 8 smooths the highs and really beefs up and tightens the low end.

Still actually cleans up when rolled back too

Another vote for 250k pot. It makes a huge difference with the JB.

I've got an LTD Elite Horizon-III. Its alder with a maple neck through. Sounded awesome with the duncan custom. Sounds perfect for me with the dimarzio dominions.
