If anybody owns or has played a Bogner Shiva, can you let me know how versatile they are?

I want good cleans(which I know it has), and a pretty "gainy" rhythm channel(not so sure it has this). I would boost it with an overdrive, but I want to know how much gain it has on tap.

Thanks!

Great amp and very versatile. IME, the Shiva will get you into JCM800 territory with the gain up. The only thing about the Shiva is that it really needs to be at gig volume to get the best out of it. Check out Justin Derrico or Rafael Moreira- both Shiva players with great tone..

Awesome, anyone else???

What exactly are you looking for gain wise? It's not all about the amount of gain because many amps have comparable amounts of gain but they have different gain qualities and overall timbre.

There are loads of Shiva clips out there that should help you understand how much gain the Shiva has.

I had one for awhile and never quite bonded with the gain side. The cleans are out of this world though. I agree that is has to be cranked pretty loud, otherwise the gain isn't very defined/articulate. One other thing of note is that it doesn't take boosts well at all....IMO of course. I tried a ton of them and they just added to the mush factor.

If you play a strat (or single coilsin general) it sounds amazing at mid-gain classic rock stuff. The Shiva has alot of low mids that really make single coils FAT. But it just wouldn't gel with my humbuckers. This was all with the OS Bogner 2x12 w/V30's. I even tried some Scumback H75's with it.....same story. Again, this is just my experience. I'm not slamming the amp because it does some things perfectly.

If you want the perfect Shiva gain (without the stellar cleans), check out the Morris Rockgrinder. Very similar low-mid voicing with much more clarity and punch. A bit more "Marshally" if you will.

Mostly 90's stuff...Creed, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam...I want a real thick punchy rhythm tone with a fat lead tone.

I have been using one for two years now as my main amp (1X12 closed back combo). Good all around amp, more of a classic rock gain, nothing like XTC or Uber. I use a SD1 or BB preamp for boost and gets me into 80's Metal. Loop is good if using it with line level effects, and the louder this amp is, the more defined and dynamic it gets. To me it sounds best with Bogner cabs.
Bob Savage has a bunch of clips and settings at his web site.

i just got a 20th Shiva with KT88's

Really impressed, very versatile in my opinion. Lovely cleans and the crunch can give me anything from plexi territory to high gain metal. Has a great open warm sound.

Some of the guys recommend sticking 6550's in there

It seems like an all around good amp, I'm just a little weary of the overdrive. I guess I just need to find somewhere to play it.

The 20th Shiva has a wonderful high gain tone on it. Smooth, not fizzy, or brittle. Very thick and usable. It doesn't fall apart or become unstable at low or high volumes. Changed mine over to 6550's from 88's and it is an awesome amp.
