I have major GAS for the following 3 heads...

Carol Ann OD3r
Dr. Z Maz jr 18 NR
Morgan deluxe 20 or dual 20

I want to finally try before I buy something instead of going in blind like I normally do. I dont want to get amps that crossover into each others territories anymore, and buy before you try is the best way to do this.

I will be near the Columbus area for a little while and was wondering if someone here could point me in the direction of some higher end shops to go and try out a few of these amps. Any help is greatly appreciated, and thank you!!!

100 miles to ATL. 2 guitar centers to call ahead on, and Atlanta discount music carries a few Dr Z. The Maz 18? I think 3 when I was there a couple weekends ago. The Splawn street rod, 6V6 amp is there. Cool amp. They have a few amps of that type. It gets loud in there. Also they have 50 or so dirt pedals. Good place to wast 4 hours.

I got a Maz 38. Punchier version of the 18. They take pedals very well. The 38 Is available with a loop. The on reverb models supposedly have a little more gain. I can't really tell.

Also in Atlanta is Boutique Guitar Exchange. Michelle and the team there are awesome! They carry Carol Ann, Friedman etc.

Further north in Georgia is Humbucker Music. They carry Dr. Z and Morgan, among others... Suhr, Mesa, Goodsell, Orange, Jackson, Jim Kelley, 65 Amps, etc.

Humbucker is awesome. A very large selection of high quality pedals. An unusual collection of guitars. Good ones, not the normal run of the mill. I don't think they have any any Gibsons or PRS, a few Suhr's but they are in the back and they don't mention what they have in stock that is not on display.

It is not good for me to go up there.  So many fun toys.

I was going to try out Humbucker Music for sure, but they are about a 4 hour trip. Thank all of you guys for the suggestions so far though, and keep them coming please!!!

I think I might only have use for the Maz 18 NR. I will only be doing mostly home recordings, clips, and playing out occasionally with it maybe if I find a band to play with. If I get into a band situation maybe I might need the extra headroom... would I just be better off getting the Maz 38 with a z brake installed?

I was on the fence on which Dr Z for about 6 months. The 38 sold me for two reasons. It does have a MV, so you can crank it back. The punch it has is really large when you do dial it up. It can feel more like a 50W if you run it thru a 4x12 and crank it.

There are lots of 18's popping up used. ADM has 3 or 4 Z's in stock normally. The 18 sells the most. If you never plan to gig it in a decent place or an outside party, the 18 is ok. I guess.. YMMV   Ya really need to play both. The difference in dynamics when you do a rake into a chicken pickin lick is substantial when loud. The 18 compresses out flat where the 38 punches. I don't play out often, but when I do, I want it to sound right and be fun. Life is too short.

You may want to call the downtown ATL guitar center. I thought they had a used Z head there.

I grew up in Columbus...there is nothing there guitar wise...come up to Atlanta

Cool, can you recommend any places over in ATL???

I think I will try the 18 and 38 side by side for awhile before I make a decision.

Call Atlanta Discount Music, ask for Jimmy, store manager, cool cat. He owns a Splawn, plays, knows gear. They even kept the store open late so I could swing by after work to test drive an SLO. They have those too.

Downtown Guitar Center has more stuff. Call ahead. They have all the Bogner amps to test drive. Fun store. I would just call the Marietta store.

There's a cool store in Montgomery, AL: www.elitemusicsales.com. Should be right up your alley and not too far from Columbus...I highly recommend Atlanta Discount as well. They usually have a decent selection of used stuff too Do any of you Atlanta guys remember when they were on Clairmont back in the day?? I bought my first real guitar there (japanese charvel) and the salesman was Peter Stroud of Sheryl Crow fame.

How cool is that..

That was before my time with ADM. I go in there a bit and chat with George. He was showing me some of the Beatles songs his band plays. Did you see the Goodsell posters with the hot chics and George? He knows how to look cool next to a hot chic in a bikini.

I will check out elite music. I do the Saturday road trip with my bride for lunch and a music store trip.

Yep, saw the posters. Pretty funny. The used to have a wall of ebmm evh's when they first came out too. Oh if only I had a time machine...

Anyone care to also share where you get great setups on your guitars done? Not just minor alterations and setups... if needed be, who does really great serious work on guitars? I can be picky, this is why I need to buy some tools of the trade and work on a few cheaper guitars until I can be good at setting up my own!

Kerry Marchman at Too Many Guitars in Tucker, GA...there are a few other guys here in ATL...I wouldn't get my guitar setup or worked on in Columbus...the best luthier in town died a few years ago.
