Brett is good in the studio. I have seen them live and he was having some pitch issues. But, cool band from FL that I followed since the first release, "Fly from the Inside". When the guitarist, Todd, left, I sort of lost interest though.

I agree with the other responses, Brent is a monster singer, and I also started losing interest after "Fly from the Inside"......but definitely after "Us and Them".
I think Brent wanted to "change directions" a little bit musically, and Jasin Todd was battling some very serious demons. Jasin could not hold it together, and was basically ousted from the band before he could resign. He is married to Melody Van Zandt (daughter of Ronnie), so he will be ok, though.
Hence the blessing to record Simple Man, and the rebel flag McNaught.
Jasin is a great guy, and I can't say enough good things about him, but honestly I don't think he wanted to tour as heavily as he was expected to. Shinedown seemed like a dream come true for him in the beginning, but I think it quickly exceeded his expectations, when demands of touring and being away from home so much, kicked in.

Jasin Todd is an awesome guitarist and the whole family history is cool. The original band had a hell of a lot "soul" and it was evident in the music. And live, those boys put out and are one of those "humble" bands and play for their fans...not the fame. I think Jasin was the original guitarist that got me interested in the VH4. He was one of their earlier users.
Two era's of music that standout in my mind - Seattle bands in the early 90's and Jacksonville bands in the early 00's. Fucking awesome!

He stays far away from the high stuff live though and has to change many vocal lines in just about every song. Backing vocals support the upper register. I thought he had unbelievable vocals also until I watched a bunch of the live stuff. Most of the live DVD stuff has been re-cut. That being said, I really dig them. After all, it's only rock and roll

Sound of madness is a killer cd. Son of Sam and devour are great heavy pushing songs. I wish live they would cut out some of the fkn ballads it loses steam.

I completely agree with Steve. The line up with Jasin Todd was the best. We played with them a few times, they were totally cool. We were on a radio station festival together and myself, Jasin and Brent were backstage in the hallway talking and Jasin heard that Down was playing the side stage. He was stoked, but had no idea how to get to the side stage, so I offered to walk over with him so he could check out Down. The three of us walked out of the backstage area and went out one by one from the gate separating the backstage area from the regular area, and immediately Brent was mobbed. Jasin and I walked right on by and towards the side stage, as Jasin says "THAT's why you don't have orange hair!" (Brent's hair was dyed bright orange and he was immediately recognized).
Another time we played a show with them was when Nick Perri was in the band. Great guy, and killer player, but the whole vibe of the band had changed, and it just wasn't the same. A few months later Nick left the band.
FYI, The Sound Of Madness was recorded with session players. Tim Pierce did all the guitars for that record (and did a fucking brilliant job too!).

Yeah gtr work it fuckin tight !!!! Diamond eyes is a kick ass tune too. I like there heavier stuff. I believe they used diezel on sound of madness correct me if I am mistaken tnx cj

I like them, great singer. Although, some of their CD's have a lot of songs I find myself skipping over.

A great rock band with great potential.. Kind of in the same boat with me as far as Alter Bridge goes... Amazing musicians, great hearts, small egos but something is lacking or not achieving the potential that they both possess...Maybe Im selfish and expect more, but so far all the albums from both bands have been ok to good.. I want something Epic.. and I know both bands are capable of it..that's why I think Im a bit disappointed everytime I buy the new record. Regardless, it sure as hell beats the Nickelbacks and Theory's out there.

Love me some Shinedown. Been into them since The Leave a Whisper album came out. I'm actually in a Shinedown tribute band called The Sound of Madness- A Tribute to Shinedown. Here's a little clip of the ending to Diamond Eyes to close our set. Crappy cell phone vid but...
