I had a slo 100 with the depth mod and it was cool but it went down the road anyway I was thinking about getting a hot rod 100+ with the xl mod. Is the slo really worth the extra 1k? Thanks for any info.

Artnick,i read somewhere that the HR100 amp was discontinued a few years back because it WAS so incredibly close-sounding to the SLO-100 and mike soldano didnt want the HR100 to complete with the SLO-100 sales

I owned a HR50 for about a year. I gigged with it a few times and while it was a good amp, I always felt is was a little thin sounding....(thats through a G12H30 loaded recto/oversize cab btw) and the high frequencies were impossible to tame. Its a good crunch rhythm amp I guess, but for lead work I thought it was thin, especially higher up the neck. This amp didnt have any of the mods but I was told by the guys at Soldano the depth mod sucked on these amps....Go figure.

yeah, the HR50 has always been available, plus now they're redesigned to have the DEPTH mod included on the front control panel as a "stock" feature.i always felt the 50-watter needed a bit more more ooomph & low-end kick.a GREAT amp,for sure! the 100-watter was discontinued for some years, but now it's back also with the factory DEPTH mod on it...and yes,the "XL" mod did not sound good.too muddy since it was like having a density feature set at MAX all the time...most guys had this mod removed.the adjustable DEPTH mod is "the way to go" ;)

I had a Hot Rod 100 for a couple of years. It was a nice amp. I just got tired of hearing it after a while. I can't say that I've ever had that happen with another amp.

Had a hot rod xl +, did a depth mod, was a good sounding amp. Now own a SLO, it's a GREAT sounding amp. When I owned it, I compared my hot rod to a 'real' SLO - and there was enough difference that I still wanted the SLO after the shootout.

Pete

Big difference between Hot Rods and the SLO. I had both. Dont believe the people who tell you Hot Rod is good enough. I mean, it IS good enough. Its a great sounding amp but once you play an SLO, you will notice a big difference in clarity and punch.

That must be why I hated mine with the XL mod. I wish I would have known this a few years ago. I would have had that mod replaced with the depth mod and kept it. I just thought that the HR's were not for me.

yeah, sucks i had a nice snakeskin HR50 a few years ago & sold it not knowing, then, that my "tonal" issue with it was from the darn XL mod that was on it...oh well, live & learn :D
