Any of you knuckle-draggers play thru a Celestion Redback speaker?

I'm thinking about either getting a Friedman open back 1x12 that has the Celestion 150 watt Redback speaker or putting one in one of my 1x12 cabs.

I have an Orange Dual Baby amp and using it for gigs with an Orange vertical 2x12 which sounds amazing and fairly light. I thought about even going lighter and more compact, even for practices and was wondering what you guys think of the speaker? My Orange Super Crush 100 has a 100 watt G12K100 that sounds great in a 1x12 format.

Ive got a redback/v30 mix in a 2x12. I like it a lot. Definitely prefer the redback to the k100

Am i correct that the Redback had less mids? I actually wouldn't mind a dip in the mids since my Orange has enough mids. I have an Orange V30 1x12 so good to hear it would be good with that.

Definitely less of that high mid spike from a V30. The redback sounds more woody to me with a nice low end to it also

I’ve never had one but I hear they are a pretty dark speaker and the Celestion IRs I have confirm that
I thought they were dark the first time i played them. But i was coming off of H30 annies and those are bright as shit.

They are in fact very balanced. They have powerful lowmids and i think that is where the dark thing comes from. You probably wouldn't pair a dark amp with them. But if you have a bright amp, they are the shit. I feel like they pair perfectly with the MGL

I love those G12H30s but yeah they have teeth haha. Don’t listen to me, I think greenbacks are dark.

The thing that really sticks out about redbacks IMO is they are very smooth sounding compared to just about every other celestion I've tried which you may or may not like, for me they were boring so I sold them. The person I sold them to actually was looking for a smooth speaker to replace his V30s in his mesa cabinet, I never heard back from him so I'm assuming they worked out for him.

You can hear it alongside a lot of other high power speakers here: although not unfortunately the G12K100.

IMO the Redback is completely deficient in high end and not useful for general applications. But as with all things YMMV. I'm an unapologetic EVM12L (Black Label or Mesa suspension) fan in 1x12s.

I had a Friedman 2x12 and replaced one of the V30’s with a Redback. Later moved it to a Bogner Cube. Hated it in both applications. Don’t get some of the praise I see online.

I have always wanted to try the evm12L. I have heard good things mostly.

I definitely get the smooth talk with the redback. The speaker is much smoother than a v30 and especially an h30. I think if you have a very raw amp with a lot of bite, it calms down the grating high end compared to an H30 and helps you to balance the Eq. It takes away the fizziness of a V30. I can also see where someone would not want that for gigging situations where you want to really cut. It takes out the grating frequencies from those amps though for the bedroom scenario and makes the amp more forgiving at higher volumes. I wouldnt say it neuters the high end, but i understand the sentiment.

With a lot of the higher wattage speakers, you lose what is special about celestion speakers, and the redback retains the best part of the voicing and gives you the ability to have more clarity with high gain, imo. I think it is like most speakers in that it needs to be a good match for the amp. For me, it has a beautiful sound, is punchy as fuck, and doesn't add compression.

It is what i always wanted the g12k100 to be. The k100 has the same massive low end, but is very hollow whereas the redback is very full and sweet sounding without dominating one frequency range
