About to swap out some pickups, going HSS in an American Strat. Looking at the SSV humbucker and mixing it with the V54 and V60. Anyone used the single coils? What's the verdict?
The magnets are supposedly correct to vintage Fender specs.
Good choice with the SSV. It's a perfect PAF type for Strat, with good clang.
The V54s are polite, with a gentle mid scoop.
V60s have more punch, with more mids and highs.
V60LPs are tamed in the highs a bit. These are my faves.
MLs sit between the 54s and the LPs. More even than the LPs, more push than the 54s.
Versatility is the key. We cover classic\new country and lots of southern rock (and a few blues and dance standards). I like to be able to get gainy and drive hard with the humbucker and still pull off passable split coil in the 2 to get a decent country sound. Love the 4\5 positions for clean passages, bluesier turns, "stratier" sounds, etc.
I never got on with splitting a bucker
A parallel option may be one to consider
Choosing the singles is hard without going through them yourself
54s are old school
MLs the mature option
60LPs have more sass
60s slice through
