looking for the best bang for your buck 4 stringer, any opinions on the L-2000, either tribute or used USA ones.. just looking for something to mess around with direct for recording. Any other bass recommendations..?

I sold a bunch of extra unused stuff lying around so I have about $800 to spend max. Also I'm a noob when it comes to bass.. my hands are fairly small so anything with a huge neck would be hard to play for me.

I've heard they make excellent sounding and playing bass guitars. Haven't had the opportunity to try one though.

G&L makes some GREAT basses, see if you can get your hands on one first. check out a couple different styles, some have thicker necks than other, kinda like the difference between the J and P Basses. Also try out the Musicman basses, the new imports are nice as well.

I prefer the J-bass necks myself, a little smaller, and very comfortable. lots of killer brands out there can be had for good prices....

G&L
Musicman
Fender
Spector
Ibenhad (although I dont care for them)
Warwick
etc....

Go to a few stores and try 'em out and see whats comfortable for ya.

need an amp? I got an Ampeg SVT4Pro for sale ;)

The Squier Classic vibe basses seem to get a lot of praise on the web.

I play bass as well, and consider getting a `50 style Precision and a replacement pickup for it. The SD Vintage rail is a direct fit, and the rail humbuckers in single coil format has been described as a good match for them.

Plus I think it looks cool as well.

I already have this active 5-string, so a more "vintage" would fit the bill

+1 on the J-Bass necks, they are smaller than your typical P-bass neck.

For $800, if you can find a used Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass, I would go with that. That is what I have, and the neck is pretty small and fast. Mine is the best playing bass, I have ever used.

Also, a used musicman sterling 4 string is nice too. It has a neck similar to a Jazz bass and active electronics. I miss mine, but I plan to get a 5 string MM sterling at some point.

BTW Juggernaut, why are you selling that SVT4pro? I thought about it, but I think my Ampeg SVT3pro is plenty for my needs. Also, was this your MM sterling5 you sold, if so I wish I would have seen that  ? http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthrea ... t=musicman

Don't laugh, go to a peavey dealer and check out a Grind bass. Under four bills new, I am really impressed with mine and I bought a used one.

Check out some of the Schecter basses. The look pretty nice. No experience other than messing around with them in the store.

Check the Peavey's too. Good looking stuff.

I have a used G&L Tribute L2000 that I picked up for $350. It is an awesome bass for the price I paid. It can sound huge or pretty tame. Versatile. Mine doesn't get played that much at this point since I've been playing my Stingray5 most of the time.

add a nice bridge pickup and go!

I wanted a bass to plunk around on, nothing serious and did it thru rondo for cheap. I bought a $99 lefty four string added a new bridge pickup and I am totally satisfied, it serves its purpose well.

nope wasn't mine, my moniker over there is KAOSBass, I'm selling because the band I play bass in is VERY influenced by Pink Floyd, Tool, Janes Addiction, etc... and I use a stereo rig, with a 4x10 and 2x12 cabs, one is almost always dirty and the other always clean, I use alot of FX, so, currently I'm using a friends G-Major and PSA-1, and running them into one side of the 4pro, but I thought it would be cheaper, cleaner, and easier to just use an Axefx and power amp..... :D

I don't think I need a amp, it would probably piss off the neighbors, just finding something for direct input. How different are the MM Sterling (import models) compared to the MM basses?

not enough for me to justify the price difference.... played a few of the sterlings, and they all felt solid as hell, IIRC, the electronics are the same, just built overseas. kinda like the Tribute series for G&L.

Check out the Talkbass forums classifieds, there are ALWAYS killer deals on quality basses to be had over there.

Thanks, will check out that forum

I really like G&L basses. They are definitely one of the best value for the money used. I have only played tribute guitars but they seem pretty good for the money.

A cheap bass that gets a lot of praise as Basstalk.com is the OLP copies of music man stuff. Not easy to find, but if you do, totally worth it.

For the prices of the new import models (and I doubt you will find much used at this point, they've only been out since the summer), you could snag a used USA made EBMM Stingray or Sterling. I love mine, its probably the best put together/feeling bass I've ever played.

Carvin. No question. You could probably get a used one for $400 and it would kill most $1000 basses. I happen to have an Ibanez SDR bass and at around $400 new, it's tremendous. Plays great out of the box and sounds excellent.
