Any Triaxis users around here? Was thinking about picking up one to get the stereo thing going and not sure whether to risk a used one or go all out for a new one. Any issues, quirks or bad experiences with them? The tone possibilities with the right power amp seem endless.

I have owned one .... they are cool. But your amps are much better. When mine was stolen I never even thought about getting a other.
I had a rack with that and a JMP1. But I always got my main sounds from a head and used it to get a lot of variety.
I would check one out before I buy. ...... if you can.

Now for an opposing viewpoint... I have/had many tube heads. Every time I fire up my TriAxis/2:90 pair--a HUGE smile goes on my face becasue of the complexity of tone/smoothness/and right amount of give for me to suit my playing style. Never had I had a negative comment on this rig's tone and more importantly, never have I felt that the TriAxis didn't sound good one particular day. It ALWAYS sounds good.

I'd say buy used. You'll either love your Triaxis or hate it. My feeling is that the lead / soloing tones are awesome from the unit as are the cleans but I struggled with obtaining a heavy / high gain rhythm tone that was better than just average. I've heard some great rhythm tones from it but I was getting the impression that I either had to add more gear to my rig or swap guitars / cabinets to get that tone that I wanted for everything... Just my opinion.

I LOVED mine. I still plan on grabbing another one some day.

BUT: there are some tricks to getting good tone out of it.

the "dynamic voice" control is just a bassandtreble booster/midscooper.

You're better off leaving this at zero, and using an outboard eq.

I never got a tone out of Lead1red that I liked.

the cleans were killer, as were all of the lead two channels.

It was like shred heaven.

damn, I miss that preamp.

I guess the "Dynamic Voice" ties to mimic the EQ sliders on the Mark Series? What sort of outboard EQ did you use Gene?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

You're exactly right. They do try to mimic the eq sliders. I guess it would work well with a darker power amp (like the mesa 290). I used a bright Marshall 9100, BTW.

As for EQ, when I had my Triaxis, I was just using the parametric section of a Boss SE-50. It sounded REALLY good.

Now, I use a TC Electronics 1128 midi graphic eq. GREAT eq, btw.

First off, I think its a great sounding unit and makes for an extremely flexible rig, especially when paired with a 2:90. That said, I think its horribly overpriced when you compare it to the competition. I liked mine a lot, but not enough to keep me from bumping it in favor of my old ADA MP-1 or my JMP-1 (which was also trumped by the ADA). The touch sensitivity/dynamic response is not good as was mentioned earlier...plan on programming your patches with the volume on your guitar wide open and making your all of your tonal changes, no matter how subtle, via midi controller.

Overall its a great sounding unit that lacks the feel of a real amp but IMO makes up for it to some degree through its flexibility. Try one out, compare it to some other pre's, and make and educated decision.

VERY processed sounding. The 'feel' sucks too.

yuck.....don't want that

steve

not necessarily
I had one for 8+ years
and it did everything for me
mine was used too
any problems, you can retube or fix pretty easily at the mesa store in hollywood or mail it in

as far as mesa goes, if you like mesa tone
then the tri axis was as good to me as having a dual recto plus many other mesa sounds and grea clean sounds

the only reason I got rid of it is cause, I just didn't like mesa anymore

After about 15 years, I will be selling my Triaxis to go to the Axe-Fx. Not that the Triaxis doesen't sound great, it is just time for a change, and having the MK IV too it is kind of overkill for me.

I'm going to ditto all of this...except I sometimes run the dynamic voice on '1' just to give it a little boost. I've had mine for 10+ years...still love it although the AxeFx has taken over for live use.

Isn't an Axe FX Standard $1400 used?

Triaxis can be had around $900 I think.

Lately, it's been mroe like:

Axe Std = $1275?
Triaxis = $1000 or so

I used a Triaxis with a Strategy 400 and one of those metal grill older Mesa 4x12s. Thats was my "signature sound" for many years. No EQ or nothing everyone said it was the best live in person hard rock/metal sound they ever heard coming out of a amp.

As for the clean channels they leave something to be desired but are usable.

Wow, I'm a bit out of it... Glad to see the Triaxis went up in value! I should sell mine.
