Now for an opposing viewpoint... I have/had many tube heads. Every time I fire up my TriAxis/2:90 pair--a HUGE smile goes on my face becasue of the complexity of tone/smoothness/and right amount of give for me to suit my playing style. Never had I had a negative comment on this rig's tone and more importantly, never have I felt that the TriAxis didn't sound good one particular day. It ALWAYS sounds good.

Ditto!

They are very over rated imho.

just like any other mesa amp I know

today I played a DC-5
if the amp wasn't open, I'd think it was solid state
even the clean channel is shitty
it's VERY dry, bright and middy, almost like a marshall valvestate
no tube warmth at all

I recorded and played a few times with a Triaxis
all the drive channels and modes sound exactly the same, just changing the amount of gain (mud)
very weak sustain for rhythm and no tightness or articulation for fast picking
it's a good thing to add as a filling layer on recordings, but no way I could use one as my main tone

I also tried the V-twin rackmount, had a Single Rectifier and I just got a damn Dual Recto on a trade

the only Mesa amp i've played that I could live with was the Stiletto Deuce I, but it still was way too dark and flubby, and the EQ isn't responsive enough to change its character

Ordered..... :D

Steve

Awesome!.

And........................READ THE MANUAL.

This is one of the only preamps I've owned where I needed to consult the manual to get good tone.

use the settings in the manual before you start branching out

I recommend the 2:90 power amp
everyone thought I had the most brutal set up
put it on the red channel (recto)
with a couple mesa 4x12's it's brutal

but check out the orange channel (mar IIc+ setting)
it is really nice, you can do a lot with that channel on lower gain

You're the first person I've seen suggest that anybody should use the Rectifier setting on the TriAxis.

the red was the most mushy and undefined
the others sounded the same but a lot clearer
I played it through a JCM 2204 clone and through a mesa fifty fifty
tried several settings, boosters and a few different cabs, including the mesa recto cab
maybe the tubes were old and shitty, but everyone agreed that it didn't sound good in any occasion
we even recorded blind tests with the triaxis, a rockmaster, the JCM clone and a SLO100 clone
all of them sounded much better than the triaxis (my favorite was the SLO clone, the other guys preferred the rockmaster)
and people here where I live would trade their mothers for a damn Recto or Triaxis
until they actually played that
three of my friends owned that preamp and nobody could stand that for over a month or two

if you compare it to a recto head & you like the recto head
then you will like the recto channel on the triaxis
that's all I'm saying
I had both for a while and I was able to cop the recto and sound better, so I stuck w/ the triaxis
but that's when I was younger and was into rectos

I don't want to sound like a smartass, but did you read the manual?

did you set the lead 2 modes with bass at zero?

I'm being serious.

I think it is great to use as a addition to the amps you have Steve. You may really like it. It sure does give you lots of sounds a click away. :)

i had v2.0 no phat mod.

played it live for 7 years. i loved it as it was an encyclopedia of mark series tones. never as good as the real amp heads dynamically (i had a IIB and a III), but still fun in it's own right. kinda like a really killer mark series modeller.

fwiw i put my triaxis recto mode up against my old POD 2.0 recto model, into the rivera power amp and the POD even back then was at least as good....

gun is 100% about the dynamic voice..very plastic and nothing like the real graphic on the heads.

use it more to cut weird frequencies versus adding things.

i went from a marshall 50/50 to a rivera tbr-1 60wps to mesa 395 power amp.

mesa pre likes mesa amp.

but at the moment i'd have to say a axefx will be hard to beat for a preamp if heavy tones are your game, and the fxs are up there with eventide/tc/lexicon.

I'd say buy used. You'll either love your Triaxis or hate it. My feeling is that the lead / soloing tones are awesome from the unit as are the cleans but I struggled with obtaining a heavy / high gain rhythm tone that was better than just average. I've heard some great rhythm tones from it but I was getting the impression that I either had to add more gear to my rig or swap guitars / cabinets to get that tone that I wanted for everything... Just my opinion.
This was my experience too! I could not get a heavy rhythm tone that I thought was worth a crap.

i wonder if dave friedman could mod the recto channel or lead II red....that would be IDEAL.

I normally don't run much FX. All I use is a wah, flange and delay. I bought an Axe FX Standard when they came out. Didn't care much for all the programming and tried it as an FX unit only in the loop, but didn't care for that either - so back in the box it went. I need to find it a good home. I wanted to have a true stereo rig for a W/D/W set up, which is one reason for the TA. Will run either the Mark III or Mark IV up the middle dry.
