Anybody ever "BLOW" a V30 ?

I sold this a early 90's Celestion 16 ohm V30 that was in perfect working condition.
I get a Email saying I sent him a blown speaker. I assumed he melted the voice coil.
I asked him is it dead? does it just sound bad? etc.
He replies back that it has a ripped cone four inches long starting from the dust cap out.
I have done my share of damage speakers, but I have never ripped a "guitar" speaker from playing.
He says it was in a homemade 1X12 cab with a 30 watt amp turned down and lasted less than 5 min into a set.
Can this be a fatigue issue or abuse?
Thanks

So a 30 watt amp into a 112 is turned down for playing out. That doesn't add up right to me.

No, but I made out with one once after having too much to drink

I have a Marshall Vintage speaker that I got and the magnet was shifted so far out the cone was seized. I assumed it happened during shipping. That could have happened here. The Other speaker was fine. Seller was surprised that one was dead.

It was college and you were experimenting... I know.. :D

I guess I was asking for it with BLOW in all caps in the subject line.
The guy is being very vague about what actually happened. I assume if the motor structure was dropped during transit the voice coil would rub would sound like sh!+ from the get go.
Also who gigs with a used driver without playing at least for a few minutes after installing?
I was hoping somebody has seen/done this before.
I am still waiting for a picture.

Was it used with a bass amp??? I find it hard to believe that 30w of something at any setting can blow a speaker rated for 60w. But that's me.

I am with you on this one. I have tried like hell, but never blown one. Hell, a V30 can take the onslaught of a cranked Plexi in an ISO cab. Sounds more like he "slipped up" during installation.

This one has a peculier shape. :scared:

My thoughts exactly, I am sitting here thinking of how to do this to a driver; Plug in active bass guitar and dime everything, dime outboard EQ from 20 to 500hz and pluck the hell out of a open E dropped to a D.
Even in that scenario, I am smelling molten adhesive bonds before paper is ripping.
The amp in question is a Fuchs ODS 30. "less than 1/4 of the way up"

Peter just smoked (I think two) V30s in a 4x12"- with a Herbert though.

"Smoked" vs 4" ripped cone.
I used to work at a car stereo shop in the late 70's; we would plug 6X9 speakers into 120v so we could send pack as a bad pair. Never forget that smell!
