I am getting ready to start my first refret on my 1985 G&L. I have researched the web and have came up with mixed results. Gluing frets, do you glue before you press or hammer the frets in or do you glue after and let the glue wick into the joints?

Thanks

suhr puts the glue in before hammering then afterwards drips some into the ends if that counts for anything....no idea how you could put the glue on after hammering in like w/o getting glue all over the place

The refrets I've done were on rosewood fingerboard that I flattened the radius, thus having to re-cut the fret slots. If the fret slots are the right width for the new frets you won't need to glue at all. I believe you can widen the barbs on the fret slightly also as to not need glue. Having said this I still had to glue a fret once that didn't seat properly. Use extra thin super glue and it will wick into the fret. There may be a narrow line of shiny glue next to the fret afterwards. Have fun.

Thanks for the information, here are a few picks of my tools and the guitar. My wife bought me all this stuff for my birthday, should be a decent start for what I need.

I am no expert, but I think you are going to need a fret bender of some variety, you could possibly make your own.

I use fret bending pliers and radius gauges. Frets are now bent to radius of neck and ready to be hammered into fretboard.

nice graphic on the Superhawk, is there a blue dress on the other side of the trem?

No blue dress, I did a sketch to scale and had a local sign and graphic place make it for me. This is what the guitar looked like when I bought it, someone rattle can painted it red and I sanded it all off to the original white that had aged yellow.

I usually press frets in with either a drill press and the correct radiused cauls or with a stewmac jaws system. I usually wick the thin stewmac ca glue in on each side of the fretboard once the fret is pressed in, mainly to keep the ends down. the water-thin stuff wicks pretty far into the fret slot. I guess you could also wick some in on either side of the fret as well and clean it quickly with acetone, but i've never had a problem without doing it.
