Got a quote on repairing my sm57 from a company in Montreal. I had checked all the leads.. they are fine. This thing is more than a few years old so I was interested in what it might cost. I had seen people sending theirs in to the company in the US and 50$, it was sent back working or replaced without bill of purchase etc.. because they "never die"... apparently this is how they stand behind their product. Not sure how it works for us, but the quote i got back is not from SHURE, looks more like a company that distributes for them here in Canada. Anyway, 11$ to get the mic there, and a "discount" quote for the capsule and work of 87$? Add to that another 10-15$ to get the mic back to me and i am at what, 113$? Seriously, I want to send this to Shure in the states with a note telling them i will never buy another one of their mics if that is the pricepoint for replacement/repair in other countries. The person who opens the box will probably say "look at this loser? lol, no worries.. EVERYONE still uses sm57's".... and they are probably right... except for the fact that I see more 906's popping over cabs in live use nowadays. If didn't already have all 57's and a 52 for my drum kit, I wouldn't be so annoyed by it but now I'll have to throw a 906 on the floor tom and the general sound i feel will be different between the two mics.
Anyway all this to say that i doubt i will take a dent out of their business or even a mouse size morcel, but they really should have even prices across the board. Anyone know if they would be a little more forgiving in their prices if I sent something from Canada? Is it even worth bothering to pay 20$+ postage and dealing witch customs on the way back? Probably not. I won't be buying shure again though.... on principle !
..... (until i need another one that is...)
