I've wanted a quickrod for about a decade now, and I'm finally in a financial spot to pull the trigger on something. Just curious if anybody has tried a quickrod with 6550 tubes and how it differs from el34s in that amp. Wondering if it opens up the highs a bit?

I have the latest version el34 QR 100. Its plenty bright if you need it. Have you played one that you think you want to open up the highs?

I have a Super Comp with 6550's .......... absolutely love them !!

for what ever that's worth

No I haven't played one before. The only "experience" I've had first hand is the Axefx3 model of it. (which is great) I was just curious if anybody had tried it with 6550 tubes since I've seen a few with them. I figured it might add some aggression that would be welcome to the more metal applications

Absolutely! any sort of input is helpful. Have you been able to compare it with el34 counterparts?
No I have not ...... it's my first Splawn ... and my first amp with 6550's

but I recently built a 2204 and went with 6550's in that ... because of the Super Comp .... and now it's the only amp I've been playing now for a few months .

My main modded Marshall is 6550 loaded. I love them over EL34s for high gain stuff.

What do you like about the 6550 tubes over el34?

I find EL34’s have an inherent mid to high mid emphasis naturally which plays well with stock Marshall frequencies, but once you start piling on gain, their voice gets over pronounced which can lead to an odd frequency response or ear fatigue. The amp has to be tuned to EL34s persay or at least the tonestack should be able to be adjusted such that their response can be accounted for. 6550s are a more linear tube top to bottom spectrally and I find I can play a 6550 amp many hours longer than an EL34 loaded amp before I’m tapped out.
