Anybody? Any tips for doing this or favorite mic placements?

I've miked up a speaker in a X-pattern then mix to a stereo track.

ALL the time... Either the same driver (one mic about 50% from centre, the other closer to the edge), or two different drivers, same cab. I stereo them out, and A/B them each to find the sweetspot for each mic - usually one is a touch heavier on the bass, the other (the one closer to centre) a touch heavier on the brights. I try to keep 'em about 1/8" off the grill cloth; but to add a bit of bass, you can move it back (away from the grill cloth) by 2" to 4" in either position.

Really simple home recordings into a Focusrite Saffire 14 interface.

Yes, and just find the sweet spots.

Usually I have seen one mic at the very outer edge of the inside cone and the other mic about 50% from cone to edge.

You guys using two mic stands, or is there some sort of dual mic clip?

Whatever works man, I use stands, and I've also duct taped mics together with a spacer between them for stage use. Seriously, doesn't matter a damn. Some cats use a box and simply rest the mic on that.

Of course, the ultimate would be to have a midget hold the mics for you. But this can be very cost prohibitive depending on the country you're in.

Yes I have with good results! I think you can run into less problems as well then if pairing with another mic cause sometimes they don't always compliment each other. I have been digging the 57 and pr30 combo lately though

We use 2 stands cuz we are broke, But ideally I think 1 stand and 1 clip would minimize any mic movement during the track.

In regards to the above. I highly agree. 2 different mics would probably sound better to my ears. But 2 different sm's in 2 different spots will also yield 2 different sounds.

(1) 57 can be hard to find the sweet spot, but (2) can be magic!
I like parallel just a bit off the center, 2 mic stands

Lots of possibilities with this, and no hard, fast rules. As a general guide, experiement with placement, both on the cone and away from it, in and around the room, back of the cab, etc. You'll come up with something you like fairly quickly.
I would start with one mic on the cone (experiment with placement...the sound will get brighter the closer you get to the edge) and one in the room. Walk/crawl around listening for a "sweet spot" and put the mic right where your ears were when you found it. I've had good results placing a mic about 5' out in front of the cab at the same height as the speaker and mixing it with a speaker right on the cone.

I swear I cant get a good sound out of the 57 for the life of me. Tried every placement in tandem with two or three mics. I dont get it? Dont even want to use a blended 57 sound?? How the fuck everyone else gets them to sound right I dont know? My fav's are a AT4047 right up close with pad, and a cascade fathead2 about 15-20 inches back.

Combine all that with the fact that I'm using an Uberkab with V30s and 75s and I've got a lot of possibilities!

I hear you...I actually was using my 4047 today and loving it. 57s sound like ass without a decent preamp- what are you using? If it's less 1k that could be the reason your angry...but cheaper pres sound decent enough with other mics, just not 57s IME

Would be epic to see live.

One thing we used to do at the conservatory for live settings was take two 57s side by side in one general area of the speaker, but have one set just about an inch or so behind the other. Play with the adjacent fader levels to get a lil different EQ and intensity goin' on without even touching a pot.

Similar to this?

I almost always use two mics and utilize their phase as EQ.
