From the outside, it has to look like the rest of the doors in my newly finished basement so it is a shaker style door meaning it is thinner in the two inner panels. The saving grace at least is that it is solid core. On the inside of the door I plan to fill in the shaker space with 3/8 plywood, green glue ( I have some extra) and then slap on 3/4 sheet of MDF which is slightly bigger than door so covers the door crack all around. This would allow me to use my door handle currently. Then of course some weather stripping all around the door and door sweep. On top of that I am going to probably build out a 2x2 frame and make the door one solid panel of rigid insulation. In my tests with my cell phone, even just putting it between a wall and rigid insulation significantly snuffed out the sound. If there is solid 2.5 inch behind it, it should do the trick to at least control the sound of my drums and other gear. I should add that the room and ceiling is solid. Double 5/8 drywall on both sides of exterior wall, 3 layers of ceiling and surface mounted lights. There are weak spots for sure as sound will always find places to go but i am happy with 75%. The two doors i have are the weakspot. One into main area, the other into closet under the stairs which i am setting up to mic my cabs loud.
Pics from anyone who has done their own door or beefed up their door would be cool to see to give me ideas.
