anyone else prefer solid state?

I have little experience with amps, but I actually prefer solid state to tube. Less maintenance, and quite frankly, they sound fine to me.

Prefer???

Hell no, but...

I have owned and still own and use several solid state items. A V-amp pro when I want to wank by myself, a randall preamp when I need teh BrUtaL MeTaLz, and a Crate (yes Crate) 2x10 combo that has served as a backup amp for prolly 10 years (plus it is basically '80's hair metal in a 60lb box   )

So hell yes, I'll play solid state anyday, but tubes were my first love and they still feel so right

Went from a Marshall HDFX 100 half stack to a Diezel Einstein/Orange quarter stack, and the difference is massive. There is absolutely no comparison. There really has been no maintenance issues and I have had my amp for almost 9 months now. Oddly, I still have my Vox Valvetronix. Incidentally, it has a tube in it   . Tubes ftw.

My amp was made in 1959 and the maintenance is rare and in general not at all. Sound wise tubes are warmer solid state is more hi fi. You can warm up solid state with pre amps so it can be done and in the end its a personal thing. BB King gigs with a Lab series L5 and does the blues real good. No tubes in a L5.

I have demo'd those amps, and could never really get into them. They are missing that response that tube amps have, the dynamics are different. Not as warm, just something is missing. I'll take a tube amp over a solid state amp any time. For the record, the MG series isn't horrible, just not good.

i do prefer tubes...but...SS is basically if not all maintenance free...if you're ears can't tell a difference then I say play the heck out of them and enjoy it and not worry what anyone else thinks.

I still have a Marshall Valvestate 8040 in the corner I pull out once in a while. I used it for quite a while with no complaints. Although it does have a single tube in the preamp, I think that's more of a marketing tube.

I dont PREFER either, I like them both for very different reasons. I'll ALWAYS be a BIG Randall fan.

No way. There are a few solid state amps that I like, but FAR more tube amps. I'll take a good tube amp over a good solid state amp anyday.

I like solid state only for modeling amps at bedroom volume. Loud, solid state does not compare. I have seen a couple of bands that were using line 6 heads, they sounded horrible. As far as Randalls, I saw Pantera at the OZZfest and Dimebag sound was just costant bbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I could not even tell what riff he was playing. On record, his sound is cool. I remember everybody was into Roland Jazz Chorus in the eighties, I never liked it. I prefer a Fender BF. I use to use a ADA MP-1 with a Carvin FET400. At the time I thought the sound was cool. I than bought a JCM800 50watt. When I cranked that thing, the response was great, very touch sensitive. A few years later I tried a ADA MP-1 with a Boogie tube power amp, WOW ! Totally different from the solid state power amp. Tubes rule, leave the solid state for the am radios.

I know he's probably the most notable solid state player, but I don't think Dime is a fair reference.

Wasn't he a big time scooper?

Thats fair, I just used him as a reference because as you said he his probably one of the most notable ones.

ive had my ampeg for about 7 years now. ive never wanted another amp. ive had many people play it and ask what kind of tubes were in it.

That amp is cool if you play death metal, but I can't say it's really all that good for many other styles. I had one and liked how it sounded but there are a ton of tube amps I'd rather have instead.

I love my PODxt and I love my Marshall solid states, but nothing beats a decent tube amp
