Back in the early 90's I had several thousand dollars worth of the stuff considered decent for the day. Got completely out of music and gear back in 1998. Sold everything including guitars, amps effects, etc. Didn't even pick up any instrument and play it for 12 years.

Here in the past couple years (2020-22) though, have been looking at all the current offerings. I was really growing weary of my dearest peers/bandmates cobbling systems together that were neither dependable, nor did they know how to run them. I love some of these folks as my own brothers and sisters, but damn guys BUY SOME GOOD SHIT for a change!! Would ya PLZ!?!?!? And learn how to use your shit!! We don't need to hire some stupid-ass sound guy for EVERYTHING!!! I don't really want to get involved in this madness, but damn it we need a better solution. I finally said the hell with it! Guys and Gals....let the old luddite (me) crack open his mad-money piggy bank, and have a crack at this.

Back on track:

In short........wasn't sure about all the self-powered speakers. But I figured what the hell, lets give some a try. But just before that, I put together a small system of 4 passive EV (2 EKX12's) and (2 JRX212) JBL 1 X 12 (two-way horn & 12in speakers) enclosures with stands and a powered Yorkville M1610-2 mixer. This works for small duo or single gigs....or just small gigs period. The mixer is 800W into 4ohms per channel (class H PWR AMP) I use one CH for front mix, the other for monitors. Not bad, but not happening for medium to large rooms. At least not for me. But it is light component wise individually. Easy to transport can set it all up and break down myself. Wasn't over the top expensive, but not exactly cheap junk either.

On to the powered units....started with 2 of the JBL SRX815P's (internal 2000W Crown PWR AMP's) MUCH BETTER and can drive them with the post EQ/preamp outs from the Yorkville. Relative only to what I know about it at the moment, seems pricey and have a bit of weight (65lbs ea). Built like a brick shit house. Went ahead and got Tuki Padded bags for everything including the small system.

Debated powered subs, but instead 2 more JBL SRX's. This time the 3-way SRX835P's. Also definitely built like a brick shit house AND AS HEAVY @ 97lbs ea.

Next.....a Mackie digital mixer. Couldn't decide between the DL16S or DL32S, went with the DL16S. The 16 seems to be the most popular since the box stores and even the small dealers are always out. Found a new one on Amazon last week and snagged it.

I'm not buying a bunch of MIC's right off. Drummers we use have their own, as with everyone else with us that sing. I've always like the Shure Beta's so I got myself a Beta 57, and Beta 58.

I'm sure I'll be adding more stuff later, but I need to study up and get a handle on setting up and using what I have so far.

This stuff has changed a bit from 30 or so yrs ago.

Anyone else out there on a P.A. system building journey?
