Anyone ever toss a ceramic magnet in a suhr aldrich?

Hey all,

My understanding is the aldrich is based on the JB to an extent. If I tossed a ceramic magnet in the aldrich would it sound similar to an SD distortion? Just curious as I generally favor ceramic magnets in pickups and have a bunch of aldrich's in guitars. Thanks

My understanding is that it’s overwound to get the high output. If that’s true, the ceramic magnet would either sound killer or probably kill sustain due to causing string pull, causing you to back it off height wise to get it to sound its best. Nothing is for free. I think it’s a great idea just to try

I have not tried simply because Suhr uses some sort of extra hard potting material that cant be easily removed. I didnt want to risk ruining a $150 pickup by taking it apart.

Why ruin perfection! I'm serious, I believe it's the best JB variant I have ever tried...

Yep! I've got one. It's amazing and it will never leave my old standby '87 Kramer F-3000.

I run the Suhr Aldrich in the bridge and 2 DiMarzio HS-3's in the neck and middle positions. Glorious tones.

At the end of the day I'm a DiMarzio guy. When I shop for pickups, they're my first choice but I've got a few great pickups from other brands as well.

Suhr unfortunately won't make me one with it and won't really discuss it. I tried before. For me I like the pickup, just like I like the JB, but I just tend to gravitate towards ceramic magnets for me

I bet ToneNerd could build you that. Shipping from Japan though might be more expensive than the pickup :)

Sounds like it would be a lot harder than initially thought. If you’re alright with sacrificing one trying give it a go. I don’t know how he designed the magnet structure on it (bar magnet or vertical magnetic poles)

Lacquer potting? Might depend when it was made

I have taken apart two Aldrich pickups for repair and didnt have too many issues. Seemed like regular wax to me.
