Anyone have clips of Einstein with 6550's?

Well, it's once again time for new power tubes, and again must decide what to get. I've had Ruby EL34BSTR's and SED EL34 winged "C"'s, and they were both very good, but I'm very curious as to what a set of 6550's or KT77/88's might sound like. (I hate 6L6's) Is there a tube that will tighten up the low end (like the Herbert), without sacrificing that EL34 grind type of tone characteristics?

Anyone have any clips with tubes other than EL34's or 6L6's?

How about a mix of EL34's and 6550's?

Anyone?

No help here as I don't have clips but I can tell you I was recently privileged to play through an Einstein loaded with KT-77's. It sounded glorious with plenty of tight, crushing low end ('course that's helped by playing it through a Diezel G12K-100 FL cab) but also retained that nice organic EL sound. I liked it alot

The 6550 will get you where you want to go.(based off my experience and what it sounds like you are saying you desire).

I have them available. PM me if interested.

There Bad Ass ! Fat full on warmth , never no problem getting tight low end from my einstein, ch 2 is pure diezel magic .

It seems giving the 6550's a try is the logical next step. What brand do you suggest? SED Winged C's, Electro Harmonics, Tung Sol, Ruby? Hmmm...

I would go only with the SED 6550 winged C's

Hi,

probably I'm the only one, but I have to confess: I didn't like them and went back imediately to the EL34s.

I apologize! ;)

I didn't, as well. But as long as I try something different from EL34s, I go (almost) immediately back.

We are the poor EL34 cursed ones here, I guess ... :)

We'll have to get a 6550 quartet as some point, though, since I might be proved wrong ...

The KT77, KT88 and 6550 should all get you closer .... I think I have a quad of each if you want to try them. Knowing your taste I would guess you well like the KT77.

Steve, give me a call when you wake up

On my Einstein, the 6550s (SED Winged -C-) have provided better cleans, and more dynamics on the channel 2. I'm really happy with them

But as always, this is a matter of taste and very subjective...

I am using a set of 6550's with a set kt77's.... Its absolutley fantastic. The right amount of tightness and punch with the kt's and the 6550's really round out the bottom end and sound sweet on the clean channel. If your into experimenting I would highly recommend this setup.

my Einstein came with the el34l's. I have always been a 6l6 player and wanted to change the tubes, peter decided the sed 6550 was the proper choice and i decided to try those first. as they were expensive I ordered one set with the intention of getting another shorty thereafter . on a whim i decide to install the tube for the 6550 el34 mix and I feel like its the best of both worlds more dynamics and punch but still has the el34 harmonic midrange grind. I am so currently pleased Im gonna keep it this way!

try it!

Excellent post's boys! These are the kind of reviews I was hoping to hear. That someone has tried some combinations, and liked them! I tried El34's and 6L6's once, but just can't stand the 6L6 thang, so out they came. But, you guys just might be onto something!

Well, if you want tube characteristics.....I have tried many. For the most head room, clarity, full sounding, note articulation, punch and crisp sound....to my ears, nothing has touched the 6550. My next favorite choice is the KT77 as that tube provides the goodness of the EL 34 along with the goodness of the 6L6 on the cleans and such. It has a wonderful dynamic to it and works well in all styles. I play heavy styled stuff so I lean a bit to the 6550 for that reason as well plus I have the ability to open my amps up and play them loud. The 6550 needs to be pushed a bit more then the 34, 6L6 or 77 IMO. Once you push the 6550 it really comes alive to my ears. It is a very telling tube. The 6L6 by itself wasn't my thing. It sounded good for cleans for sure and for bluesy gritty rock stuff but again, I don't play that. If I did, I may like it more but who knows. The EL 34 has some wonderful dynamics to it that I like but sadly 34 quality on the whole sucks. We have a new tube we are using that works very well with our amps. The BHT is durable and also sounds wonderful. It is hands down my favorite EL34 tube in our amps. I guess my personal choice in tubes from my fav to least fav. is 6550, 77,34,6L6.
