I thought about picking up one but would probably be using more for chords instead of solo work. I wondered if the poly function was useful or useless. I know it will not take the place of a 2nd guitar but was hoping it could be cool for added texture.
Thinking of using for some mastodon sort of stuff.

Ooh fancy. I have been using an OC-2 since the early 90's and it is one of my favorite pedals. I have never used an oc-3. I like how low fi the oc-2 is though so I guess we are after two different things..lol. The oc-2 would never work for chords since it wouldn't track well enough. It looks like the OC-3 has some more features and it might track better. I know the OC-2 was always how you hit it. You had to try a bunch of them to find a good one. I would imagine they finally got it right. I doubt it will sound like a second guitar, but it will probably give you some really cool tones.

in the other band i play in we are three guitarists and use bass octavers to either play bass or add texture

in our case 2 line6 m9s and the other guy uses an oc-3

the m9 doesn't really do chords, goes all warbly trying to pinpoint when it's more than 2, the oc-3 seems to do this as well

it's awesome for single notes otherwise, and seems to work particularly well with p90s

It sounds to me like your looking for a Eletro-Harmonix POG.

I thought of that but I hate to drop to much $ if I don't dig it

I just tried an OC-3 and didn't really like it. Sounds a little too smooth and artificial for my taste. The poly function isn't really for chords, rather it varies the response and volume of the octave depending on where you are on the neck. I didn't try it much with chords but the literature says it's intended for single note stuff.

The more I read on the boss, I'm starting to think its Shit brown for a reason!

I actually prefer the imperfect tracking...call me crazy, but I think it adds character and some funk to the sound. Not funk like Parliament, but just funk. It reminds me of an organ or something.

i have a love and hate relationship with mine, i use it to fatten up solos for stuff i double tracked on the record, it does its job. it has a unique tone to it, the pog doesnt get the same sound, and really i havent found a better octaver out there. The pog tracks better and is polyphonic , but to me doesn't sound as good distorted as the boss.

Ive tried pretty much everything and havent been able to pull mine off my pedalboard yet haha, for chords its not to great, doesnt like the lower notes it seems. .... and the polyphonic feature sucks... but for single note stuff (think cky) it kicks ass..

Just wanna chime in to say how awesome the oc2 is. I love mine for big single note riffs and certain lead runs, but for chords it's useless.

yep I know what you mean, you're not crazy. and in my opinion i still think thinks its the best on the market. I use it to play a lot of Deep Purple tunes with no keyboardist and some blues riffy stuff like Mabe I'm a Leo, its an amazing pedal and great for J.S. Bach- type lines that are not so technically fast. The POG is just fun to get different sounds and go nuts on, but the OC-2 will always be on my pedal board.

I totally agree. have you tried old DOD Octoplus? I never owned one, but I remember borrowing it and recalled that it tracked well and sounded pretty close to the BOSS OC-2. I may actually get a used one and compare for the hell of it.
