I've played both the standard and the special a few times, and I LOVED it. Very cool amps

The tone that guy was getting was great. I played one about 3 months ago in Nashville and like it with strats and certain speakers. Im thinking when my house is done I'm going to get a Lonestar for a second amp for different tones and for other people to play when they come over to jam in my home studio. I think that would be a good contrast to my Bogner and used they arent bad price either.

Didn't you have a Bruno Cowtipper earlier this year? I would think it's better than the Mesa.....

For clean yes it was. Thats pretty much all the Tipper did though. But the Lonestar does a great clean and a pretty good distortion when dialed in right and that would be a different tone than my Bogner that would be cool for some recording situtions. That said Im mainly getting one just to have a good amp for someone to play through when they come over if they didnt want to bring an amp.

ahhhh, ok. I liked the Mesa Lonestar Special but thought the CAA OD100 SE+ was better cleans and I recall you saying the Cowtipper was better than the OD100. Would love to try one out.....

What did you think of the distortion side of the SE+?

^^^I posted a thread about the SE+ before the big board crash last July, so it's gone. BIG disappointment. I don't know how o describe it but it just did not sound 'right' to me but mine had the 5881 tubes and regular trannys, not the el34s and plexis that everyone is raving about. Those cleans and boosted cleans were amazing though. Such great cleans and then the high gain was the biggest letdown.

Yeah I played two different OD's that werent SE+'s but one was a OD50+ and one was an OD100 Classic...... one was in Nashville and one was in St Louis and to be quite blunt the distortion side was pretty bad. The gain was so fuzzy and ratty sounding that I couldnt believe an amp at the price range sounded like that. Now I dont mind a little grit to my tone and I dont need it to be super smooth either but good night, the gain channel was bad, bad, bad. Like you said the clean side was awsome though.

That said I think Sam Hill's clips of his SE+ sound really good for that type of thing. I dont hear any fuzzy rattiness in his tone at all so there is probably something to the EL34's and plexi trany making a difference.

I dug that tone too. I guess my only complaint would be thats its almost too warm/flat sounding on the top. As if I kept wanting to hear more "sparkle" from it.

I could definitely gig with that sound though. I remember when these first came out and I tried one and I didnt dig it at all. I guess there have been some revisions since then?

I don't think there's been any revisions. Remember it's not a Marshall so if you set the tone controls like a JCM800 it will sound like a turd. You have to keep the bass really low or it flubs out. I remember i tweaked the Lonestar Special like a Mark series Boogie with the bass low and the treble high, and presence low. Of course it's not a metal amp but does rock well, and the cleans are really nice. You can get that smooth Eric Johnson thing going. A Lonestar head would sound a lot better through a 4x12 with Greenbacks rather than the small 1x12 though.

Another cool amp is the Maverick. Pretty similiar to the Lonestar.

That does sound great. Was that the special or standard?
