I played saturday at an outdoor festival where it was about 40 degrees. I was fine when we first started but after 2 or 3 songs my fingers were so stiff I could hardly pull off any leads without just sounding silly. Anyway so last night we booked another outdoor show for halloween night, and I have a feeling the weather will be about the same.

If you've done the fingerless glove thing, what kind did you wear? Was it practical?

I use them when trying to hold on to a cold bottle of beer while participating in the Iditarod. They work fantastic in this application.

You know this thread is going to head in the direction of Lynch in 3......2........1

I would say from a practicality point of view, they'd probably have to be leather as your standard cotton or polyester are going to slide around too much at the back of the neck making your palm/hand muscles work way harder. How about a portable space heater at chest level on a chair? You know, the opposite to Steve Vai's using a fan to get that blow back retro look!

What are we talking about again?

haha yeah I can be sweating while everyone else is freezing... seriously though, that would be a tuning nightmare. I remember once bringing an acoustic guitar to a campfire in the winter. I literally had to sit still in front of the fire and not move around much to keep it in tune. If I turned around and faced the cold even for a second, it would instantly fall out of tune.

i played a cold outdoor show once...the first song or two sucked, even after warming up! but after that the bloodflow and working the muscles actually made my hands warmer and i did fine after that. maybe you could have a space heater nearby to warm your hands up when they get too cold? may not be practical, but its a thought. i couldnt play in gloves man...just like i cant play with rings or watches on...LOL

I think fingerless gloves are exactly what you need to keep your fingers warm...umm, wait

Just keep those warm packs that golfer's use in a easy to access pocket. When you have a moment you just pop your hand in your pocket and hold on to it. They generate heat for quite a while. Might look a little suspicious if playing a kid's birthday party though

I've requested fingerless gloves for a prostate exam.

This is a good idea actually. I mean if I'm gonna be somewhat violated by a dude, then at least he can get some butt jiuce under his nails.

To the OP, why not just get some and try it out? I know I would hate it, but I have fairly short fingers, and can't stand even wearing rings when I play. Lots of glam dudes in the 80's did it though.
