I read conflicting answers on which pickup criss used for the record "hall of the mountain king"?
some say it was bartolini? some say JB? and in this interview, http://www.realsavatage.com/criss/inter ... w_88.shtml
his tech said dimarzio but does not mention the model?
someone has to know?
another thing i read by the guy that was a member in the band with him(chris caffery) was that he used the duncan JB.
He said "i use the same pickup as criss did the seymour duncan JB model"
this guitar does not have a bartolini which all have a EMG style cover.

Criss tone he used 2 Boss Sd-1 into low input channel of Marshall on had tone all the way up one all the way down drop c tunning And yes Caffery says JB pickups. He also had a 31 band eq in the equation and a stainless steel pick. The pick believe it or not does make a difference in his tone. The stainless picks make short work or your strings.

If I had to make a guess when listening to the albums, using my ears, from things I've read, and also the common general switches in equipment over time in that 80's era, the early Savatage albums are Dimarzio Super Distortion, then I think on the Mountain King and Gutter Ballet it is a JB, then on Streets it sounded like he switched to a Duncan Distortion. Last album Edge of Thorns, I dunno, sounds like a JB again.

I have no idea what those Bartolini pickups are supposed to sound like so who knows.

I have a older JB i will retry with a metal pick and see what that does, thanks.

yeah i can hear that super d on dungeons, but for HOTMK the Duncan JB it is for the tone i am after
Luckily i have a real old one i can try again only this time with a metal pick.

Yeah I love that tone, I've really analyzed it, it's really hard to cop though with that thick production over everything, I think he is using a Laney amp on HOTMK, or possibly some kind of rack preamp through the Laney. I used to think it was a Marshall, but I can't even come close with that. The Laney profiles I've tried on a Kemper get much closer to me. It also sounds like he is using 9 gauge strings too (for the leads anyway), with a steel pick that's shred (as in lettuce) city. JB for sure though.

You guys have me listening to Savatage Power of the Night right now.
