I've seen them going for less then 1500 I can possibly get one for 800 where I live is that a good deal or should I wait and get a axe fx 2? I know they are like computers every time a new one comes out the old one loses value I'm also thinking of an atomic amplifire.

I still have my Ultra....going strong, 10 years or so. Still finding amps I've never gel'd with or bothered to sit down and figure out. still putting out good tones, and haven't had a single issue with it (knocks on wood).

I'm really considering holding out for a kemper could take forever tho I you yi

I might be able to get an axe fx for 800 barely used tho kid got it as a gift never got into it

I have an AFX2 and Ultra. Still enjoy the Ultra as a preamp in a power amp + cab rig. It is a fantastic unit for that application. Go look up Mark Day's original Ultra demos; monster toanz. They were really good when new but an awesome deal at their used, discontinued unit, prices. They make killer FX units for a head, too.

I have an XL now and still have the Ultra as well.
Using my Ultra in the loop of my Friedman SS100. AWESOME!!
Great for this use and then if anything ever happened to the Friedman, I could finish the gig with the Ultra if I had to.
I feel like it's a great way to use this piece of gear.

I also enjoy the XL, it has KILLER amp sounds...
I guess it depends on what you need. XL is great, Kemper is great. Both different AND great.

What are you looking to achieve with the purchase??

When you're going Axe into Poweramp into 4x12 cabinet.....is there really much difference between the Ultra and the II? I know direct there is no contest but with a poweramp and a real cab I wonder if things are even.

I'm looking to turn it mostly into a live rig and record with it sometimes maybe do some PA direct to avoid being micd also hook it up to a few powered monitors at home for a bedroom rig so in a nutshell I'll be doing a ton with it

I'd like to know this too because it would be mostly what I'd use it for

I once had a Standard Axe and ran it into a Mesa 2:90 into some cabs. It did sound good.

The Kemper confuses me because I hear all these great clips online, pros are touring with it, studio guys are recording with it. Yet, I tried it twice and thought it sounded pretty aweful both times. Once was on a Mesa 2:90 into 4x12 and it sounded pretty weak. A Mesa Mark III just kicked it in the nuts. And I know we had the cab sims off so I'm not sure what we were doing wrong. Another time was in a GC on a wedge and nothing from it sounded good to me like that.

I got the Ultra probably 5 or 6 years ago for $2K brand new. While it sure hurts to find out that it can he had for under $800, its the same with any piece of gear unless its vintage I guess. Anyways, I was looking to purchase some new amp to purchase...its been more than a couple of years since I played the guitar due to stressful jobs and what not. I landed on this Youtube video where some studio guy posted his metal patch of Ultra. I dialed it in and now I'm yearning to go back home and play the guitar!! I've lost all interest in purchasing any new gear. The Ultra through a FBT verve 12ma and now this new tone...it'll keep me occupied for quite sometime.

The tool's only as good as the time you put in on it digging in an getting sounds that work for you.

Having gotten that bit of obviousness out of the way, I found the Ultra to be a well-rounded tool for a MULTITUDE of sounds, but could never get a 'hi-gain metal' thing dialed in that ever really suited ME, I'm sure others have found it to be more than adequate, and at the time (maybe this has been rectified? idk) everytime I'd do an update it would write over stuff whether I liked it or not, even when I was promised it wouldn't do so... so...

Put it this way, if I had need of a piece of gear in a studio setting I think an ultra would be a great addition of tones to inspire...
Me, I had to get rid of mine and move on long ago. 8 hunge sounds like a nice deal to me... :)

The good thing with tube amps, they actually have a real residual value years from now. In a couple of years the first AXE FX is going to be as worthless as a Super Nintendo
