Anybody?
Maybe its just due to the Bogner closed back ported cabinet, but i LOOOVVVEEE the tone that comes from this speaker! So balanced yet warm. Very tight controlled bottom end and crisp without being harsh.
I absolutely HATE vintage 30 celestions, and im under the impression that they are almost alike.. Is this really true? I dont see how.
What are your thoughts about this speaker vs other ones..?

I really like the Classic 80s I have in my 1x12s. They give nice cleans and great higher gain tones. Not ice-picky at all.

However, I think a more Greenback-type speaker would be best suited for mid-gain/Plexi tones. Don't get me wrong; I think the C80 can do these tones fine, just not as well as others - especially recorded.

Bingo!!
The hardest thing for me to find in ANY speaker is getting something without those "ice-picky" highs!! This is the first time ive ever found that. THE reason i hate v30's is because of that beamy ice-picky tone that comes out of them especially at high volumes.
Anyone else?
Could they be used in a 4X12?

I am a big fan of Classic Lead 80's. I have used them in a closed back 112 and closed back 212. They mix well with vintage 30's too. the CL80's are a pretty clean speaker, fairly flat response. They don't add the grit of a V30 or the mid hump. The main complaint I see about the CL80's is that they don't have enough character.

I like CL80's for more modern amps, but for my vintage amps (Fenders, Vox), they are kind of meh. I liked the 212 with CL80's with my mesa mark IV and Marshall 2553. I recently switched that cab to 2 WGS ET-65's and like those better with the Marshall 2553, but preferred the CL80's with the Mark IV.

The V30s and CL80s sound nothing alike, to my ears.

The V30s are more of a classic-design speaker (small dust cap), and have a LOT of inherent character, and breakup easily.

THe CL80s have a larger dustcap, more modern design, don't breakup on their own nearly as much, and are pretty neutral.

Funny to see this post, as I'm in the midst of trying to decide what to replace my speakers with. I've got a 2x12 closed back cab, 16 ohms with 2 G12H30's and I can't like them no matter what, I've tried. Bass gets muddy very easily, I have to really watch the gain and bass eq to keep it sounding good, the high end can be spikey, and I'm always trying to eq mids.

I've been looking closely at the CL80's too... as I understand it they're a fairly clean speaker, very balanced, and sound great with high gain tones, probably a little bland clean.

 To me, the V30's have a mid hump and the CL80's are more scooped in the mids. I like the CL80's for cleans, but not so much for high gain stuff. I have a 2x12 extension cab w/ CL80's that I used for a country/blues band and they were awesome.

Not sure whatr your amp or main style of music, but if you can, try the cab with the cab off and see if that helps. My 212 with anni G12H30s is an open back, sounds good with Vintage style amps, not so much with my Marshall 2553 and Mark IV though.

For keeping it a closed back cab, the CL80's do work well in that type of cab in my experience....

Maybe its just my bogner cab but i LOVE the sound that comes out of it. Ive used at least 4 different speakers before (not in the bogner cab) and the best sound ive heard yet is with the classic 80.

Can it be used with a 4X12 cabinet or is it not able to handle the load?

Should be able to handle the load - CL80's are rated at 80w per speaker so...

I've been raving about CL80's forever. I had 2 of em in my Avatar 2x12 and they rocked hard. Super balanced sweet highs sweet mids sweet lows. Just so creamy haha. They don't pierce your ears with icepicky treble like other speakers and that's why I love em mostly.

My favorite speakers to date

Should mention that I don't LOVE them in 4x12. They are quiet good but I like greenbacks on 4x12's for some reason :dunno:

Oh and I agree. V30's and CL80's are NOTHING alike. I absolutely hate V30's in any cab I've tried it in (many, trust me) and I hate it. CL80's however, I'm in love with. Not saying it's gonna be same for everyone but it grants that they are very different speakers.

CL80's were loaded in the THD 2x12 I had. Loved the cab and the speakers.
