I'm going to try a 5751 in my Marshall to bring the gain down a little -- anyone else try this?

Hmmmm, I played Marshalls forever and never once considered "bringing the gain down". It was always the opposite.

The gain drop is pretty slight. Like 90%. I like them in the P.I. Nice and clear sounding. JAN Phillips or GE is what I'd look for.

Which position? V1 or the phase inverter?
V1 & V2. Left the PI alone. Can't remember which way I like best (V1, V2, or V1 + V2). It was OK. With that amp, though, I ended up with all pres being AX7's and just riding the guitar's volume knob.

Regular ECC-83/12AX7 has a gain factor of 100

5751 has a gain factor of 70.

If you have 3 preamp tubes put it in the 2nd slot.

On a related note, would a 5751 sound good in a EVH 50 watt head- specifically the red ch? For the 1st time in my life I think there may be too much gain, lol

If the gain is all tube it may make a dif.

If its diodes prolly not.

Cool thread. I just bought a NOS JAN Philips 5751 today to experiment with. Going to try it in my SLO 100 and see what happens...

Oh yeah. I have 2 - in V1 and V2 of a Splawn modded Marshall. Stuck them in there and never looked back. In fact I traded this amp, then he sold it, then I bought it back and they are still in there. Took this amp from Hairy Mary to musical, crunchy, and beautiful. YMMV.

Which make/ model 5751?

vintage Jan/Phillips, bought off ebay about $35 per - few years ago. Really a great trick to get some of these modern robo-gain style amps a bit under control, less noisy, less prone to feedback and a touch more useable (at least for me). I have never suffered for lack of gain on this amp.

Nice. I have the same tube coming my way soon...
