Hi all in the know,

Have any of you used the Rocktron Velocity 300 power amp? What do you like and not like about it?

I am putting away the insanely heavy rack rig and going forward with an 4u AxeFX rig. The last 3 shows I have played something failed on me or the Tone was not there. I am sick of getting to a show and finding random noise and busting my back on a 100+ pound rack. Some of my gear is getting too unreliable.

Please don't bother with the "Tube tone" snobbery. I have played tubes all my life too but I am to te point where I will leave the tubes safe in the studio. I want reliability more than anything.

Thanks for you help all.

I haven't used the Velocity ,so I can't comment, but I can tell you that I think that you would be better off going with more wattage when going SS. I have used a Carvin dcm1540 SS PA with great success and the Carvin is 1500watts, it's only 16lbs and takes up little space.

Just throwing that out there!

I have an older 250.
It's a little dark (can be compensated with the treble of course), and doesn't quite have the grind of the power section in my Mesa, but loud and tight, and stays together nicely at loud volumes. And it's pretty darn loud.

I've bounced around with the notion of ordering a Velocity 300 for my Axe-FX as well. You do read that the SS power factor is "supposed" to be 5X that of a regular tube power section.....so like you would want 500 watts SS to simulate the headroom of a tube power amp for example.

Anyway I have read alot of good things about the Rocktron although my Randall RP 2-200 Analog SS power amp was a step up from the Rocktron 100 power amp I had. I just don't know if the 300 is going to be any better than what I already have.

I keep debating the Velocity 300, SLA-2, or just saving for a VHT 2/90/2 or just screw it and keep using what I have.

I use a Velocity 150 with my Axe Fx. It's plenty loud and I use a 2x12 with Scumbacks. If you need more volume than the 300 can provide you'll make yourself sterile standing in front of the cab.
