Are Gibson gonna make anything new?

I see companies coming out with loads of new designs and features but Gibson seems to be stuck making re-issues and such and living off 'Icon' status.

  :aww:

I mean, if Gibson manufactured their legendary products with good quality, they'd be great. They've come up with a few legendary designs and taken electric guitar development forward so that's enough.

Thanks Jakem, I just threw up from seeing those.

I don't see Gibson changing much from their current strategy. The goal of Gibson and Fender is not to push out new designs, they leave that to other companies.

They're not really new, those are just backwards versions of 50 year old designs, or 50 year old designs with holes in them.

The Robot guitar is new, I hadn't thought about that. But still, the guitar itself, minus the tuning system, is... not new.

They have done alot, but other guitar companies are making new designs, Gibson seems to be stuck in the past.

Easily amongst the worst looking guitars I have ever seen.

Gibson has actually been pretty innovative with their robot guitars. I wouldn't buy one myself, but they have been doing innovative stuff like the robot guitars and using PCBs to mound pots and electronics.

Maybe Fender and Gibson got it right from the beginning since so many manufacturers are copying them to this today?

Gibson needs to stop trying to re-invent the wheel they arguably created. They should focus on their quality control and let the luthiers who work for them do what they need to do to put out consistently built guitars. The problem with Gibson is the management and "suits" who don't care or know nothing about Gibson's history and legacy. The majority of them most likely don't even listen to music.

I agree. I have less respect for Gibson than just about any other company out there. They get by, by living off their name-recognition, while living in the past. Their prices are hugely inflated, yet their QC is a joke.

People seem to do nothing but bash Gibson. Yes, their prices are insane, but the same can be said for a lot of guitar companies. I still think they make the best sounding guitars for heavy music. A good Explorer or Les Paul just sounds HUGE. I love Gibson stuff.

Their prices aren't as outrageous as PRS. And I love PRS. Gibson too.

Man! My Boogies are being slammed on one thread and Gibsons here. What the hell is going on with these once iconic brands. I go to the stores, try their new products only to leave less than impressed (I do like the reissue Mk ones though) I have yet to find another LP that compares in playability to my 79 Custom and I have been looking for years! I also agree that the PRS's are also way overpriced. There is no mojo in these guitars at all, just kinda eh. IMO.

I think Gibson prices are too steep now adays. Unless you get their stripped down guitars, they are up there. Even PRS has good guitars for less then Gibby's now.

I seriously think that Gibson makes up new price-points rather than new models... So yeah I guess in that regard they're making something new...

No other guitar sounds like a killer Les Paul....nothing! IMHO

i dont think gibson is trying to be cutting edge. they have established their trademark, and seem pretty content maintaining it.

their prices are pretty steap, but i really cant criticize gibson after the amazing customer service experience i had with them last year.

i took my zakk wylde les paul to a shop to have the nut replaced, as it had worn after seven years of playing it. i also asked the shop to do a setup on the guitar while they had it. the luthier replaced the nut, but when he went to do the setup he found my guitar had a back-bowed neck. he couldnt adjust it out with the truss rod, and so recommended removing the frets, sanding the board, and replacing the frets. i decided to wait and called gibson to let them know what i had found out. since i was the original owner, the guitar still had its lifetime warranty.

gibson had me send it to them in nashville. after a few days, they called me to let me know they had destroyed my original and were getting started on building a replacement les paul. they built me a new ZW les paul from top to bottom, and marked it with the original serial number from my first one. not only is better than the first one i had, but it is the best guitar ive ever had my hands on.

so, when i see/hear people bashing gibson, i have to wonder whether my situation is extremely rare, or if theyre just mad about the prices...i dont know.

Thank you for sharing your story. That speaks volumes about the company and helps restore some faith about them. There are alot of threads here about terrible cus. service from other companies (Thank you RTers for alerting others  ) so it's nice to read a positive one, they are few and far between these days.

Gibson are a horrible company that makes overpriced mediocre quality guitars, and any unique designs that come out anymore are completely ludicrous and not fit for a respectable musician, so the designs and prices together make them only suitable for collectors. Gibson caters to a different crowd and no longer cares about musicians.

That may be a tad harsh, but I really don't like Gibson.
