I'm a power amp noob. I'm thinking about getting a power amp and the AXE FX. The 2/50/2 is the one I'm looking at. Money is not a major consideration, I just want the best sound at about 50 watts. Any insight would be appreciated.

thanks

I think it's a matter of taste. The power section of any amp is pretty static across the board. The preamp has a more dramatic affect on overall tone. In terms of build quality VHT is arguably one of the best in the biz.

For the money, the Randall RT2/50 is an excellent choice. You have the flexibility of midi switching different power tubes in whatever combination. They pop up used on here quite a bit for half the cost of a VHT.

I have had the VHT 2/50/2 and the Mesa Boogie 2:90. I prefer the Mesa Boogie, it just seemed to push more air to me and I liked the results I got better with it. I am using one with the Axe Fx right now and it sounds incredible. You can get them between $600 and $750 at this time.

There are several excellent choices for the Axe IMHO.

I have used extensively, and highly reccomend all the following:

VHT 2/50/2 .,....Probably my favorite of the bunch, but I would be perfectly happy with any of them.
Randall RT2/50...great, VERY flexible power amp. My only issue is the fan is noisy, but you can replace that.
Mesa 50/50...Excellent 6L6 tone
Carvin DCM600..... I know this isn't tube, but it is a great amp

Haven't used the Mesa 2:90 with the Axe, but have used one before and also really like it and can't imagine it not sounding great with the Axe Fx.

I also used the QSC monitors and while I prefer using a power amp and cab (or 2), I thought they did a very good job.

The only thing on my GAS list right now is one or 2 of the Fractal powered monitors. I am really looking forward to trying them out.

FWIW, I talked with a guy who has the VHT Classic, 2150, 2/90/2, and 2/50/2. For the Axe-Fx he prefers the 2150 and 2/90/2, due to the bigger headroom and wider frequency response of the KT88's. In his opinion the KT88's let the Axe do more of "its" thing since there was no EL34 breakup. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
