at what point do you start feeling bad for your unused gear?

just wondering what others think

at what point do you start 'feeling bad for the unplayed guitars/amps' ? =0

i picked up a jazzmaster recently, which puts me at 9 guitars, and i'm feeling bad for some of the other guitars lying around, some awesome guitars that have been in their case for a bit too long, or on stands and just sit there

i went down to 3 amp heads from 5 as it felt a bit silly,

despite all the guitars/amps, i've nearly only ever had 1 4x12 and more recently a 2x12 for at home,

It's a personal thing - depends on what your drive is for music and playing. Some cats can have oodles of gear who only spend 10 hours a year playing, if that's their schitck, then that's good.

If you're an "avid" player and find that you're simply gravitating towards some gear more than others, and you don't see that changing in the near future, or your tastes haviing changed created this paradigm shift, and you need the liquidity, then sell it.

Jusst my 2 cents,
V.

I pull out and play guitars, amps, pedals, etc that I haven't used in a long while. If I see the reason for not using it won't change...off it goes.

Money in hand sure beats gear collecting dust. I never feel bad about it.

I dont feel bad.....my gear should feel privileged to be in my house! 35 guitars and 19 amps right now....

yeah i've been trying more recently to sell before buying,

i got one of those 5 guitar stands to be able to try different guitars constantly, eventually one that is never used will either get sold, or the 'impulse' buys (a hagstrom viking...for example) , will get sold fairly quickly, i guess it's a sense of being realistic with my gear that keeps coming to haunt me everytime GAS strikes =0

i do think selling a few guitars to buy say a Suhr, Anderson etc... would be a wise thing to do, but i just can't seem to get myself to sell the 5-600 euro guitars that i've been playing for the last few years

i play in two bands and have separate amps in both while using the same pedalboard, and diff. guitars in each (gibson sg 61' reissue / ibanez sz1220 in one , and a prs SE soapbar in the other), it's just the gear i have lying around at home that i ask myself questions about =0

sounds like my kind of holiday =)

I look at it like this.....I play guitars, not collect them. I can't stand to see guitars that don't suit my needs any more languishing in their cases being ignored. If I can find a buyer and get a fair price for them I'll let them go without a second thought. There will always be a few instruments that have sentimental value, like the Gretsch my wife bought for our anniversary, or the V that was my main gig guitar for years, that will remain with me, but really only the "great" ones seem to remain and get played daily.

Amps.....now thats another story

It is fun to be able to switch to something you havent played in a long time...

I'm doing it right now. I have a Vh4 that even though I play, doesn't put a smile on my face for the kind of music I gravitate nowadays. It's a pitty because I really like the amp for rock and metal, but I very seldom play that style of music.

So it's a pitty to have such a great amp and not being 100% happy with it, so as we speak I'm on the verge of sealing a deal with a buyer.

I don't feel sad or anything,, there will always be more VH4s out there if I ever feel the need or desire to own one again.

Plus with that money I'm going to buy an amp that'll become my MAIN gigging and recording amp, will have THE sound I'm after PLUS will have enough spare cash to buy a nice Hollow Body guitar that've wanted for more than a year now. And to top it all the spare coins will pay shipping for all, so I doubt I'm going to have to put any extra money! :D

Sell the stuff you don't need man!

guitars is another thing.

I'm trying to build a guitar collection that'll allow me to play anything I want.

So far I have:

1) Two strats
2) A Les Paul which I will mod with P90 style humbuckers
3) An Explorer with high output pups for hard rock and metal (seldom play metal but I still like it and from time to time a nice gig with a couple of buds feels fresh)

That's what I own

I Still need:

4) Ibanez Hollow body (Jazzy guitar, I just love the way they sound for blues)
5) Tele
6) 335 or an ES 339

Once I'm done with that I could buy another strat or what not since it's my fav. guitar and the base of my tone, but other than that I don't NEED anything else.

Whenever I see some real overlapping I usually will sell something off. Sometimes all it takes is having a different style pickup installed in one and I'll feel better about it.

Ask yourself if you're a collector or if you only want to own what is used on a regular basis.

I'm to the point in my life that I tend to get rid of any gear that isn't being used on a somewhat regular basis.

i think i'm getting close to this,

i do it/done it with amps, sell what's redundant but for some reasons guitars i'm a bit slower, as somehow they each are a bit different even thought i sometimes tend to play the same things on all of them =0 (rock/metal/blues/jazz/clean chordy goodness)

ibanez sz320mh - the cheapest and probably my favourite guitar, played it so much it feels like - home
ibanez sz1220 -
ibanez artist 300 - made the month i was born.. =0
ibanez rgr 465 - only guitar with a floyd

rickenbacker 650d dakota
gibson sg '61 reissue
prs SE soapbar II - p90s
fender thinline'72 reissue tele -
fender blacktop jazzmaster -

the ones i really play a lot are the two ibanez sz , the gibson and the prs SE and maybe the jazzmaster as i just picked it up, the rest are taking holidays in their cases =0

as said they all sound and do their own thing but i always gravitate to the same style of playing

I usually play one particular piece of gear for no reason other than sheer laziness. It could be the closest guitar to where I'm standing. The amp that's already plugged in etc...
Occasionally, I cycle thru all my gear. It puts a smile on my face, so I don't want to part with any of it.
Sometimes, I miss a particular amp and plug into it and just play it for 3-4 months straight... LOL! :D
I don't give it much thought anymore.

i find its fun to do alot of diff recording combo's. Record a riff to the left, then double with with a diff guitar, then a another combo to the right. start doing that with amps and amp setting and you will never be bored or have un-used stuff

It's good to have extra gear lying around. If I get sick of my current rig I swap things around, stops me flipping anything and regretting it later. I am at a point though where my flipping days are over.
