at7's in phase inverter slot

Thoughts? I see mostly ax7's in new amps, at7's in older.(or recommended in older Marshalls due to the increased current)
A matter of specific design? or just what sounds good?

Electromechanically what gives when say putting an at7 in my VHT or Vintage Modern?
BTW...
The VM has a PPIMV as the stock volume. Effects there?

Thanks!

In the standard Marshall type circuit I like the 12AT7 better than all the AX7's I tried.
Even in the Trainwreck Express clone I just built, which is a very revealing amp, the AT7 just sounds creamier.
The fact that I use NOS Mullard 12AT7's (still somewhat cheap) might explain some of it.
