So my favorite man in brown delivered me a set of the powered Atomic wedges...here's my initial take on them.
I tried them at NAMM and really liked what I heard although at way lower volume than I use. Well, they sounded good at low volume. Pretty much close enough to my monitors I'm used to. Cranking the snot out of them was a hell of a fun ride.
I tried them with the Axe-Fx Ultra, a Kolbe modded JMP-1, and some loaded down amps.
Now obviously with the Axe-Fx...or any modeller for that matter- it's AMAZING. The volume control for the tweeter not only adds top, but with the increase you get the old Marshall top end snap.
So on to the JMP 1, in the past I had a love/hate thing with those...with the right cab and power amp I really dug 'em. But it had to be a good match. Into the wedges it was the best JMP sound I've had.
That got me super curious about A/B'ing a head. So I grabbed my BF Bassman, and old Marshall and a THD Flexi...loaded them down and fed the line-out into the speaker sim of the Axe-Fx into them. Every single one of them KILLED.
And at gigging volume those things just came to life. Also when shutting off the verb/delay the complaint that the Axe was missing the "in the room" sound and feel was not what I experienced.
So...first day bottom line...
This will be a huge hit for any one with a modeller. I've done full range monitors and none put a grin on my face like this.
Also, for the amp guys that run wet/dry stuff...it's perfect, run the line-out of the head or mic the dry cab and send that signal into fx into the wedges...perfect.
I'm gonna set up the big rig tomorrow where I will do that. Might be time to break out the camcorder...
