Attempt on recording a full tilt Marshall through IRs

Was playing around with some new to me recording techniques.

Marshall 1978 JMP pushed by an OCD into a Rivera Rock Crusher, from there into Logic, there I used the Two Notes Torpedo free plugin as speaker sim. I also tried Redwirez IRs (clip further down). I'm quite pleased with the result, although it sounds a bit distand/not as direct as when playing in the room (I had attenuated way down to monitor without latency).

Here's the same through IR from redwirez, as a comparison:

Now what I wonder is if this sounds any better than a modeler with a JMP model would ...

Are you using the line out of the attenuator? Sounds good. I never could manage to get something that worked for me.

Yes, line out of Rock Crusher into Logic, then the speaker sims.

sounds good to me

i just got my rock crusher and it sounds so much better than my hotplate

I can't get that good a tone direct like that. I've tried line out of Alex attenuator, a home built speaker box (for load purpose only) with a Country man DI between amp and attenuator, and I've never been able to get it to sound that good. It sounds fake. I'm got a little Focusrite 2i2, which isn't great but should suffice. I'm using a 2004 version of Cakewalk, which I suppose could have a crappy VST architecture or something.

Are you doing any thing special in the DAW that I just don't know about? I just run the VST on a track. I mean, I'll add some EQ or effects and what not, but it always has the underlying fakeness to it.

Nothing special, I put a little extra high mids as the torpedo was a bit muffled. My audio interface is a 15 year old Emagic EMI 6/2 - it's surely not the latest and best out there. It was rock crusher direct into the EMI, then USB to Logic.

That's pretty solid sounding... a lot of the IR's are sounding better these days. I tried some of the redwirez stuff and it was pretty damn good. I do find that IR's suffer a little too much from uniformity or consistency. You don't have the natural effect that your playing has on a speaker. They could easily be convincing enough within a mix though.

I am equally intrigued by the OCD pushing your amp. The OCD seems to be one of the top choices among Marshallites for pushing JMP/2204's. What does it have that say a basic SD-1 doesn't? Does it sound more natural ?

Yeah, I found the Torpedo much more alive sounding than the IRs, but the IRs were more open sounding.

I wanna try an SD-1. The OCD I got long ago and it was lying around, that's why I used it. I got Level and Drive both halfway up, the amp gain on about 6, it is a lot of gain.

I thought it sounded really good - only way to know if a modeler can match it would be to try a modeler,

Was A/Bing my my Two-Notes LIVE most of the day against my Thieles. Loading my amp into it. I think what I notice most is that I can't read the name of the IRs. Just need to listen with my ears rather than my eyes. But man I got some great tones today. Spent the whole weekend listening to great amps at the Amp Show - so I was in that zone. I like this combo of real amp and speaker/mic IRs. I think it gives you the best of both worlds.

Sounds great. Nice vibe to it too, but tonally, really sounds quite pro to me and god to me.

Nicely done.

Just wanted to bump and say this sounds amazing. Really makes me want a Rock Crusher, and then the Two Notes plugin.
