I want to buy an attenuator for rehearsals and stage use to bring the volume down to a level that is acceptable in most bars. Not looking to use it for home practice/bedroom level playing.

I do not want to spend more than a few hundred dollars. Here is what I have looked at:

Weber
THD
Jettattenuator

Used Bad Cat Unleash V1

What will work and not sound like arse?

This is for a DR Z SRZ 65 head going into V30's

This is the loudest freakind amp I have ever played and I have had a Boogie Mark III, Mark IV, Mark V, Marshall JCM 800's, Fender EVH, Twin Reverb's, JSX, etc....

I have an Unleash and I like it a lot. I did have an issue with mine though, and I've heard others have too? I believe they might have made some fixes to the new ones? That being said, when I contacted Bad Cat, they took care of my issues and were great to work with. Personally the Bad Cat or a Fryette power station is the only thing I'd consider if your lookin to keep your tone intact. Power station is gonna set you back more than a few hundred for sure. I'd go Bad Cat based on what your lookin at. I have a Weber Mass and don't care for it. Just my opinion.

If you have a 2nd amp or power amp, a cheap solution would be to get a THD and use it as a load for your main amp and slave a 2nd amp, you'll get your tone at any volume, will sound better than using any attenuator alone

What about the Rivera Rockcrusher? Anyone try one of those?

I use one, and like it. It's just the regular without the EQ.. just the edge and warm. You can run your amp wide open and have the DB selector on studio, and it has a level adjustment that will be whisper quiet, with a cranked amp, and if you have another amp you can crank the volume of amp A, use that tone and run it into the fx return of amp B. It has a line out level that will adjust the volume of cranked amp A, into B.

Hope this helps!... Only thing is it's probably higher priced than what you want, but they work great!

Ive done this and it works great. Its actually the same idea as the Bad Cat and the Fryette.

Yes, Al's suggestion is a great idea. This is actually for my small rig. I prefer not to be using two amps for my small rig. I would like to just have a couple of pedals, the attenuator, head and cab. Unless, one of those EHX Magnum 44 power amp pedals would work decently.

Do you like the THD better than the Rivera for slaving?

I've never tried the Rivera, I used the THD for a long time, but now I have the SUHR Reactive Load
