Yes it does sound awesome using the master volume but at a little over 2 (9 o'clock) it`s pretty darn loud and I`d really like to get up to around 4 without shattering the windows. Anyone have an experience using an attenuator with the SB ? I used an Ultimate Attenunator with my Splawn for a few years and it worked really good , another on my radar is the Rivera Rock Crusher. Just wondering the pros and cons

I've never used one but am interested to see what people have to say.
I think even at band volumes I won't be able to push the master over 4. (Havent tried my SB with the band yet)

I doubt your going to get a better tone with a attenuator. Daves amps have one of the best MV's available. I could try my Power Station on my BE100 and let you know.

Don't have a smallbox, but use Rivera Rockcrusher with BE-100.. Want clips? What gain level are you looking for.

Do yourself a favor and buy a torpedo live. I have both masters cranked before they start sounding crappy and i am getting great tones through mid level senheiser's speakers. All it really needs is maybe a touch of verb or delay to be a little less fatiguing on the ears. I don't play games anymore i either crank it through a cab when i can or go through studio monitors or through headphones. I have read a couple threads regarding how great the master volume works and that attenuation only makes things worse.

I would guess if the rock crusher works good with the BE it would work with the SB. I usually go for gain levels of say Kiss Alive for a classic rock type gain and Dokkens Back For The Attack for the higher gain stuff

I've seen good things about the torpedo live, I'd like one, but don't have one to demo.. If you feel like it do a clip for hammered and give him something to think about.

I can do a compare/contrast using the fx master, and no fx loop through rivera by tomorrow. Something simple. tell you my settings, etc.. Yeah or nope?

K.. Cool

BE100,
pres 3 oclock
bass 9 oclock
mid 2:30
treble max
master (front) 6 (not oclock)
gain 8 oclock
fx loop vol 6 (not oclock)

Nothing fancy. 4 riffs, no eq, mastering, or squat. Boom pop for timing, double tracked. Sennheiser e609 mic on EVH 4x12 cab, top right speaker. First riff on BE channel is Kiss-ish, with the fx loop engaged, the second is same riff, but fx is off and going through Rockcrusher at -3b, edge and warm are on. 3rd riff is Dokken-ish, fx loop engaged, SAT switch engaged and HBE channel, tube screamer between amp and guitar, 4th riff same riff, everything the same except fx loop off and going through Rockcrusher at -3db. No volumes, gain or eq was touched.

Hey thanks for putting that all together , loved the Strutter riffage. I think I liked it without the Rockcrusher for the Strutter riff and with the Rockcrusher for the Breaking the Chains riff. Again thank you

No problem, I learned something myself. I think the FX loop volume does work better than the attenuator. You don't hear it much until you record. I also did one with the edge and warm off, and the amp sounds better by itself.

I've been trying out a Rock Crusher with my Small Box the last few days. It's cool being able to crank the plexi channel and get some overdrive from the power section. But even with the master down low the tone and feel of the amp are great. To me the BE channel is just as good with the master at 2-3 as it is at 6-7.

Thanks for that info , I've got a line on a Rock Crusher that I'm gonna most likely pick up this weekend

The Rock Crusher is a great attenuator, I just don't think one is really necessary to get the goods from the Small Box.

You wouldn't be the first person I`ve heard that from. I`m kinda on the fence about it but in my situation just running the master at 2 it`s pretty loud in my house. Now I know why the heck did I buy this loud beast if I`m just gonna play it in the house but I`m you and most can understand LOL

get a reactive load of some type! IF you were like me and wanted hardware that loaded ir's and not be dependant on software the live is the best choice or the torpedo studio. Suhr makes the reactive load etc etc. Like i said it had changed my life.

I`ll look into to it but to be honest it sounds a little over my head

You are 100% right about the master volume. It doesn't make it worse, just different. I had the edge and warm on, on the attenuator, and in my clips it did just that. Added a little warmth and edge, but like I said, after recording side by side, I prefer the fx volume to just an attenuator, but when recording, I think volume is a critical part of the tone. I prefer loud. My wife... does not. If you would, do a quick clip with the torpedo, because now you have me and my wife interested in it.

Seeing as I`ve only has the SB for 2 weeks I`m still kinda dialing it in. Had the BE master on 2 with the gain cranked up a little over 2 clock boosting with a TC Electronic Spark Boost set as a clean boost it sounded glorious. Probably helped that I moved my cab around a little bit to where it sounded best as I usually just just let the cab sit where it is. So you guys kinda saved me some money as the master does work great on these amps
