The greatest guitarist in the world, no one could touch him.

One of the greats but greatest? There are flamenco guitarists that smoke anyone ever mentioned on RT, so badly its laughable friend.

Definitely one of the greatest, no doubt. Was lucky enough to see him at Riverfest in St Paul, the summer before he passed..He played for 2 hrs straight doing his shuffle from one side of the stage to the other...incredible player. After the show he showed up at a bar in downtown Mpls and sat in with a blues/rock band called the Hoopsnakes, if I remember correctly. Such a tragic loss.

I’d probably throw in some bluegrass players too. Not meant to flame the OP at all because SRV was a true guitar giant. But I could never declare a single player the greatest.

He’d just gotten clean and was at the top of his game. 35 years old. That’s so young, imho.

A friend had tickets and I passed on going to see him shortly before his death. I remember saying I’ll see him next time he comes around. That was a big mistake considering I was really into him. I remember buying couldn’t stand the weather back in 1984/85. It was shocking since I was really into Metallica at the time. Which was shocking since I was really into VH. Haha

Big SRV fan. I also was into metal and shred but I just loved his playing. He had that loosey goosey right wrist and left hand strength of an Orangutan. And was just always in a groove. He basically single-handedly revived blues which I almost grew to hate because of all the copycats...but I still always loved his playing.

Props to David Bowie for giving him that opportunity on Let's Dance, that launched him.

He was such a badass. So tragic and unfair how he got clean, was at the top of his game, and went out like that...

Yea.. shame to bust your ass to clean up, get engaged and go out like that. If I remember right he took Claptons seat on that copter to get to the next gig faster to see his fiance. I too was asked to see him and figured I would catch him next time cause my funds were low. Such a loss...

Who knows where SRV would have went musically at that point. The sky really was the limit. He was still young, clean and with his mind for music....it's crazy to think about what could have been.

Whilst we all commonly say this, the fact is his well would probably have dried up by now.
Rock & blues a very 2 dimensional.

I'd go so far to say that where he was, when he passed, was probably his pinnacle. Sure he would have polished it far more but it'd still be same output. 35 is NOT old but in the musical creativity world it ain't young either.

We look at the greats from the 70s, 70s & 90s still around today & their creativity for something still unique & fresh is well gone.

This is NOT To denigrate SRV or anyone else, the fact is our creativity wells are not bottomless.

All subjective of course.

Clapton was supposed to be on that helicopter, he offered it to SRV

Terrible tragedy, so very sad. I didn't get into him until after he died, wished I had been able to see him live.

SRV was good but they asked Hendrix how it felt to be the best guitar player yet and he said I don't know ask Johnny Winter

So crazy man. That situation has happened so many times. Waylon Jennings with Ritchie Valens, Kirk Hammett taking Cliff's bunk after a card game. Even the whole mystery about Randy Rhoads and why the hell he was up there.

It is always sad when these greats pass on but the ones who have their life together and tragically die, that is when it really sucks. I'm a fan of Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin. But we all know they were asking for it. Bonzo, Keith Moon, etc. too.
