Hello, I'm new to the board, which I just found while researching cabinets. I think I've decided on the Avatar 2x12 Contemporary. I'm looking at two different speaker options. First, 2 V30's and the second option is 1 V30 and 1 G12H30. I'd love to hear any thoughts.

Awesome cab!
V30/H30 is a great combo, one of my favorites. I run CL80/H30 currently, but have used all of these with great results. Which amp plays a huge part

What amp and are you playing live?

If you are playing live, most of the time people just mic one speaker, so than it comes down to which one to mic if they are not the same....

Not playing live. Just for fun in the house. I'm shopping for an amp right now as well! I've mainly played combos in the past. I've been looking at a few different things recently. The Bugera 333XL ($279 on MF) and Orange CR120H have been the main two at this point. Looking for something under $500. I'm open to suggestions or preferences on those as well!

Get the 2 v30s if you want an agressive speaker that cuts through the mix. One v30 and anni g12h30 will be more balanced, as the g12h30 has more highs and lows, but less mids. The cl80/v30 mix is great if you need more power handling. Also keep in mind the power handling of the 212. A v30/g12h30 is only a 60watt cab. You double the power handling of the lowest wattage speaker to get the power handling of the 212 cab.

As for amp suggestions, I would start another thread with your budget, music style and features you want. Go used if you can, get a lot more amp for the money that way.

Yup. What he said. /\ I'm a Marshall fan so for that price a used DSL40C, 3203/4203(tube power/solid state preamp) or maybe a JCM 900 possibly. DSL 15 also. Guitar Center.com used site will let you try it for 30 days and if you don't like it return it to your nearest store. Avatar cabs are a great value.

Thanks for all the responses.

I just came across an EVH 5150iii 2x12 cabinet, in used mint condition, on craigslist for $300. For that price, would anyone suggest going that route instead of the Avatar cabinet? I don't know much about the EVH cabinets.

Thing about speakers is you really have to match the amp to the speaker sometimes. For instance, a JMP/JCM 800 sounds killer with G12 65s. Greenbacks, V30s, old used T75s also can sound good. Lots of others I'm sure. Its really a process of trying things for yourself. The EVH 2x12 comes with H30s which can have shrill highs. But probably a good mix for the 5153 especially the red channel. A JCM 800 might not sound so good with that cab because JCMs are bright. So I would maybe find an amp first, then google what speaker works best for that amp. IMO.

This is very sound advice. The cabinet itself is going to built well. The majority of the tone is going to come from the speakers.

I have the "traditional" cab with the v30 /g12h30 combo. Great sounding well built cab!

what they said :)

I have an Avatar Contemporary 2x12 cab (and a 1x12) and love 'em.

The 2x12 I got with Celestion Creamback 65's. Those pair up nicely with the V30's. I switched over to Eminence Texas Heat and Man O War because I just prefer Eminence, but check out the Creambacks if you get a chance.
