Axe-Fx for effects only...how is the bypass?

Hey guys!

I'm looking to make the setup a little more compact....want to get things as simple as possible with switching, etc, and get it all in a smaller rack.

So, I was curious...how is the bypass on the Axe-Fx? I'm thinking about running it 4-cable-method with my amp to get effects in front, and in the loop. I MIGHT use some of the preamp models at times, but I'm still not 100% sure if I want to go there.

The bypass is great, just watch out for ground loops/hum with the 4 cable method.
 
How about the wah on it?

I've been considering getting a rack wah for a while, but if this could take care of it for me, even better!

The wah should be pretty good. I wouldn't bother with a rack wah if I had the Axe-Fx still.
 
Maybe - but if you look at, say, something like:
3 x Eventide stomps
Fulltone lineup
Xotic lineup
EHX lineup
custom cabling with ends
pedalboard with 1 to 2 power supplies

$2000 ain't so far off.

You could just get an eventide eclipse... Very good processor. :thumbsup:
 
for effects only you could go Standard instead of Ultra and save a good bit of cash.

Honestly, I want to go to a slightly smaller rig, but I still want it to have the versatility of the bigger one I'm running right now. I have not being able to move my own stuff to jam :thumbsdown: The Axe-FX is a lot for just effects, but is there another unit that would allow me the versatility of effects out front, and in the loop, with the quality of the Axe?

Right now, I used a GCX to switch pedals upfront, in the loop, etc. I was planning on getting a rack wah, along with a harmonizer pedal of some sort.

After all is said and done, I'm easily in the price realm of an Axe-FX standard.

If I get it, I would run it 4-CM with my amps...4 space rack with the Axe, tuner, and power conditioner.

Is there a better unit for this application?

id run a pair of eventide eclipse's to account for their MIDI patch lag.

or a GM-II

or G-force.

i know Mike is trying to sell his ATM for alot cheaper than $2,000.
 
I had a Line6 M13, great unit for the price. I believe they are coming out with something similar to the Axe Fx with 3 price ranges up to $699. You might want to wait another month. The effects in the M13 are great and playing out the crowd wont be able to hear the difference.
 
I don't think it's expensive for "just effects". Firstly, just look at all the effects in the Axe and do the math if you had to buy even half of that stuff. Secondly, you simply can't do, with stomps and other rack stuff, what you can with the Axe in terms of routing, etc. Thirdly, even if you buy it for just FX, that's not what you'll end up using it for. You will use the amp sims too. Even if just for recording directly.

Forget whether or not you think the amp sims are "as good" as the amps they simulate. That's not important. What's important is that it sounds great and when you consider what that box does, it's well worth the money. And if you decide you don't like it, you'll get every penny back when you sell it.

i bought the axe with the idea in mind that it would replace my gforce

effects only

in that regard it pounds the gforce. highlights in the axe are:

drive pedals....compared to gforce or line 6 drive emulation, no contest.

univibe...great and the best i've ever heard in a rack outside eventide

verb...the pcm 70 emulation is beautiful

delay...the best memoryman emulation in a rack. a great echoplex emulation and way more controllable that a tape delay

synth...i lose hours playing on that violin or organic patch

chorus....probably the lowest on the grail repros, but still extremely nice. just not a 1210 or tri stereo, but at least as nice as the gforce and much better than line 6.


now add in the parametric eqs, graphic eqs, compressors, cab models, gates, and AMPS and the ability to blend two amps simultaneously, the internal mixing/routing eliminating patch cables and external interfaces, the various un/balanced ins and outs, and the free updates, and the editing software, and you are starting to add quite an expensive tally to try to reproduce this virtual rig traditionally
