I received my Axe-FX Standard today and so far I'm really impressed! With the 4 hours or so that I've had to work with it today I can say that it is exceeding my expectations so far!

I did start out going through the presets and I found the ones I played impressive. I detoured quickly and often, however, to get under the hood.

The presets are more than not a little over the top with effects for my tastes. A few of the early presets sound fantastic as is IMO. One really caught my attention: Preset #043: Fusion Blues - Not that far off from the overdrive mode of the Fuchs ODS-50 I used to own. A little tweaking and it was closer still. Close enough that it's like having the amp back for recording purposes. Nice that I just stumbled into it. Too much fun!

I spent some time working with the Amp and Drive pedal blocks in a simple patch I built for this purpose: Drive>Amp>Cab>Reverb>PEQ (PEQ used to shelve lows at 70Hz when playing LOUD through my KRK Rokit5 monitors). To play with the Drive pedal block I set up a basic (but very nice) clean tone using the Brownface Amp and 1x10 Gold Cab with a R121 mic. I've only dropped a few Amp/Cab combinations in so far - of those all have been impressive, very impressive! The Drive pedal block is just flat out COOL!!! I found myself happily noodling away for quite a while using a PI Fuzz I'd modified slightly. I spent a good bit of time in the Drive pedal block today and feel pretty comfortable with the various parameters. There's a vast amount of potential in this block alone!

Tomorrow I'll scan through the rest of the presets just to see what's there and then try out some interesting looking user patches I grabbed from Axe-Exchange while waiting for the Axe-FX to arrive. After that I'm going to start learning all of the parameters in the Amp block. I have a feeling I'll find myself sidetracked quite a bit - again. :D Select an amp model and suddenly 30 minutes is gone.

I ran a few experiments trying to peak processor usage and, for my intended use, the Standard is more than sufficient. I was able to get a dual amp/cab config running without a hitch though, as others have noted, I see very limited use for a dual amp config if any. The amps have so much complexity and user control on their own that I would think just about any texture/tone could be rendered using one of the available amp models.

I've played with the front panel and Axe-Edit for editing enough now to be comfortable with both. The front panel is pretty intuitive but Axe-Edit is fast and completely intuitive. My netbook and M-Audio Fast Track Pro portable USB interface will definitely be travel companions when I take the Axe-FX elsewhere. I mounted the Axe-FX into a Gator 2U shallow hard shell rack case so that I can take it out without fear of damaging it.

I'm running unbalanced to a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R USB audio/MIDI interface at my desktop DAW to bypass the mic pre's using the 1/4" outputs at Output 1 on the Axe-FX. I'm going to pick up some XLR to 1/4" TRS cables tomorrow to take advantage of the +6dB signal output of the XLR's.

I'm already damn sure I've mic'd my last amp for recording here. This thing sounds as good or better than any mic'd guitar sound I've ever captured. Controllable harmonic feedback, wide dynamic response, very expressive, very musical! I'll wait until I've had some time with it to consider how I might use it in a live context but I'm sure that will happen eventually.

I'm starting to think that my Mesa Mark V combo's days may be numbered. I can already tell that the Axe-FX can cop much of what that amp does. That amp may just fund a FRFR solution. Time will tell.

All I can say is....... WOW! ...and I've only just cracked the lid on this thing. There's a world inside and I've only peeked in through a gap in the window blinds.

WOW!!!

Wow thats awesome!

I'm still considering an Axe Fx purchase myself...I keep reading these great reviews, seems like a good way to go!

How complicated is it? I'm pretty good with tech stuff.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. If you go FRFR you'll get the most out of it and IMO the best results, it's cool to see you are getting such good results already. It took me a good 6 months to learn how to get the most out of it. I would highly recommend getting some 3rd party IR's, I use redwirez and the stock ones are no comparison

Definitely get some IRs

Really glad you're thoroughly enjoying your new gear day and that it has exceeded your expectations.

Awesome post OP!!

Ya, the Axe is pretty f'n nuts!! I've only had mine a month now, if that, and I am at it every possible moment I have - and that's not in the timesuck sense; that's in the "holy shit this thing sounds awesome" sense. I play a LOT more now than I did before with my big rigs. And please, no misunderstandings, I'll always love the feel of a monster rig behind me, but for now, stage and ways in life, this lil' black box is THE way to go for me.

Keep at 'er, it doesn't stop impressing - period.

V.

right on man congratulation
when I first got my axe fx I was a little over whelmed until I down loaded the axe edit program much better now

Pretty intuitive and easy. Seriously, 10 to 15 minutes and you're well on your way.

This. I was off and running from the start and dialing in new rigs quickly.

Nice. Good to know that it can happen quickly. I've owned my standard for about a month, maybe two but still haven't put any real time into it. It's all I'm going to have when I move into an apartment in September and who knows how long it'll be until I have a house where I'll be able to bring the "real amps" back out. At least I have the Axe FX and all it brings to the table to look forward to. I bought a Behringer mini-amp in order to use the Axe FX as a headphone amp. But I think I'm going to pick up a Reactor FR Wedge too. Hopefully my neighbors can deal with it if I play it quietly enough in the middle of the day.

Thanks guys! I'm planning to purchase some IR's from Redwirez. I'm browsing their site now. I'm primarily an old school rock (British invasion through late 70's classic rock) and blues player though I'm not limited to these genres/styles. Any suggestions on where to start in Redwirez offerings?

I'd seriously just purchase the lot of them. You get a discounted price and it's always fun to experiment.

I also spent a little time playing through headphones and liked what I was hearing. Interaction between the guitar and the sound field is lost doing this (harmonic feedback, etc) but it sounded great! Late night jamming is going to kick A$$ from here forward! :)

Done. :)

Ok - I have all of the RedWirez IR's (BigBox and SpeakerBox). I've only demo'd a few at this point but I can see where these would allow for a much more enjoyable live FRFR application. There's an astounding number of possibilities here! I'll have to record some raw tracks using the Axe-FX with no cab sim and sample these in various combinations to figure out what I want to load into the user cab slots to start out with. If this goes where I think it's going I'm going to need a FRFR powered wedge (thinking about getting an EV ELX112P). If that works out an Axe-FX foot controller won't be far behind it.

This is all speculation at this time but I can say that I'm excited about the added potential this collection of IR's offers. Thanks noob-pwn and The Hoff! Diggin' the RedWirez IR's!

ETA: I ordered an E-V ELX112P Powered FRFR speaker tonight. I'll post a quick review once it arrives and I've had a little time to play through it.

i finally got to try one yesterday,

through headphone i thought it was already pretty good, amps reacted well, felt quite good
through the pa even better but our PA is shot, so it wasn't the best comparison

the real breakthrough was through the return of one of my tube amps into my v30 cab,

admittedly the results were being coloured, but it sounded incredible, effects were killer and amps really sounded great, nuances were there and it reacted like a good amp would

thoroughly impressed, so much so that i'll probably pick one up used, just debating between ultra and the standard, what kills me is that a used ultra in the states is as much as a used standard in europe...ugh

i can understand why people are ditching gear after getting this, and on top of that free NAD every now and again along with effects through killer firmware upgrades, i don't think you can ask for more

Assess what your intended use for an Axe-FX will be. Take a look at the comparison chart of the Standard and Ultra on the Fractal Audio site. If you use a lot of effects for elaborate/complex soundscapes or have intentions to use your guitar to produce synth sounds you'll want the Ultra. The Standard will accommodate heavy/elaborate effects use and produce astonishing results but it lacks the synth, vocoder, ring mod, and a diffusion parameter for delays, and a few others (again - see Fractas comparison chart). I can, without hesitation, recommend the Standard to anyone who has can forsee no practical application for the additional effects in the Ultra. This was me, after careful consideration, and I've confirmed that the Standard has more processing power than I can utilize for the way I will use the Axe-FX.

If you think you might have use for the additional features and processing power the Ultra offers then definitely get the Ultra. If not then buy a Standard with confidence.

cool, thanks for the heads up see what the guitar funds say in a few months =)

by all accounts it looks like the standard would be more than sufficient, i hardly use more than amp comp/reverb/delays and some modulation in real life anyhow so i can't see that changing considerably when using a modeller

Grabbed the Ownhammer libraries today. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to sample more of them. What little I heard I really liked!
