After having an M4 and playing Joshs Axe Fx,I would go with the Axe hands down, not that the M4 is not good, but these 2 are not even comparable to me,both are really great tools but the Axe is like the untimate tool and it sounds great too!!!!!
At 1500-1600 used for an M4 I would get an afx and have amps and effects

I have to agree as well, you get so much for your money with the Axe. I would start with the Axe and then work on getting an M4.

Get the Axe Ultra now and keep a look out for the M4. Combine the 2 later when you can. You will have the best of both worlds. I personally had the M4 and do not miss it. My problem was I wanted to play through all of the modules and it only had 4 slots so I had 2 M4's 1 Rmod100 and 1 Mod50. 13 modules 26 channels all midi through a switcher   Im much happier with the Axe :D

I would get a real amp now and the Axe Later __ There are many things less expensive then a M4-- An IE4 just went on ebay for $700 __ And Ofcourse all kinds of quality offering at various prices.. If $ is no option the Get whatever>> I want an Axe too -- (for putting around into the laptop in hotel rooms or when abroad etc.---maybe double as an FX unit If I get really stupid) As they are so popular and holding their value I am electing to wait until the resale is not as hot -- I am kinda psyched so many people are buying them -- I have plans on picking up an Ultra for under a grand __ whenever that drops.. and If you buy your "real amp" right first then the Axe when the floor falls out-- it would be fortuitous $wise.. I guess thats a big IF but I am betting on it __ I would skip the Eleven thing -- have not heard it just under impressed with DIGI in general -- maybe if AVID revamps it -- I look at Digi stuff as disposable fwiw=0

But really you can't go wrong here __ though if it were me (i'm 36) starting out again I think it would be quite valuable to acquire the subtle touch/finesse that you will develop/define using analogue devices, if you do get the AXE buy some silly cheap tube amp to I tihnk vht makes a cheap one Marshall has a small offering - Orange whatever -- just to spend some time pushing air and tubes..

But really Dude you are gonna be in Heaven with either the M4 or the Axe__ Happy Riffing and good for you making good decisions outta the gate like this-- cheers j

Just another thought... I am not too familiar with this stuff as much as lots of cats on RT, However I remember seeing both Egnater and Randall Amps that accept that format of modules... from 18-100 watt you could use it to amplify your Axe and Screw around with the Modules too____

Its been 4 years and dozen new effects and amp models and the bottom hasnt dropped out yet. You can wait and when something new or better comes out say " well since they have this technology now I will just WAIT and see what they come out with next". You can play and enjoy the AFX and save some money on gas'n or you can wait and wait and wait, Oh eventually you will have to buy something to use or just go home and quiet playing.  Hell you might get hit by a short bus and killed while putting on your helmet then you wont need anything to play. Lifes short….and some lives are shorter….enjoy it while you can.

I hear you jlbaxe,

In my case My real amps are the Primary Focus--(not a clean or metal guy-- I just need a little sludge)

I have an old 67 plexi modded by diaz that sounds great quiet and 60's AC15/30-- a bunch of silly quiet toy amps Like kays and airlines etc. even a Carr Mercurty from when I lived in Manhattan and needed a REALLY quiet amp.... Still with an EL34! haha So for me personally Waiting for another toy is fine __ But I hear you if the AXE was what someone was primarily interested in the GOGOGO don't lose a second I agree w/u_________ I did not know it has been out 4 years and no bottom fallen out yet...
That gives a bit more Anti-Gravity to the matter... Maybe I'll jump in at 1350 then j/k

I am in east europe visiting Family playing through an $70 Ibanez amp and an Aria Strat That I leave here so I don't go nuts... The AXE would indeed be the perfect thing for right Now!!! You make me want to spend more time with it Damn!

To the OP--- Don't forget to let us know what you ended up with!

I'll definitely keep you all posted! Thanks for all the great advice, you guys rock

I think I'm gonna try to go with the Axe for now, and then possibly add the M4 to my rig later if need be. I think the Axe would be perfect for me right now...easy/silent recording, reliable, low volume, great effects, and so much flexiblility. I'm not trying to create a massive rig that will last me for the rest of my life, just something for right now that can get me through the rest of high school and hopefully help me find "my sound". I need to save up some more money, but hopefully I'll get my hands on an Axe soon. I'll let you guys know what I end up with...and if I get the Axe I will definitely be making some clips!
