Bareknuckles: Why the high prices?

I'm beginning to shop around for what I'm gonna drop into my goldtop, and Bareknuckles are high on my list thanks to all the love for them around here. I'm also strongly considering Suhr Aldrich's due to similar popularity for use in Lesters. I'm a little in favor of the Suhrs because they're about half the price of the BKs. I'm curious if anyone has some insight into the high price of BKs. Is it simply supply/demand? Or are they more costly to manufacture than your average pickup? It's often true that you get what you pay for, so I'd like to know what I'd be paying for.

Hype. Simple.
I've never tried a Bare Knuckle I liked or thought was particularly well made.
Production Duncans, Suhrs or the MCP Afwayu I just got are leagues ahead in every respect.
I'm in the UK so I should be supporting home talent but not in this case.
Sorry.

It's not only hype. It is also because they are made in England and the exchange rate with the US is shitty and shipping to the US is expensive…

What features have you noticed that are indicative of poor construction?

Agree with Steve, the exchange rate factors in. Right now it's not good for U.S. bareknuckle prices. Bareknuckle uses the Royal Mail to get them here to the U.S. mail but honestly I think the exchange rate is more of a factor than the shipping (imo).

The current and recent exchange rate fluctuations made Bareknuckle's anywhere from $20-30+ more than the last time I bought one back in 09/10...

Nonsense.
Non of the ones I mentioned are expensive in the UK.
A Bare Knuckle humbucker is approx £100 here.
I didn't pay that for my Afwayu inc postage and customs.
A Suhr is about the same price as a Duncan .. £65.

Build.. I've had exposed coil wires , a single coil with only one wire connected, microphonics... various issues when installing for customers.

I don't get it myself. I keep falling to the hype......I've owned 7 different BKP's. I always go back to Duncan's and Dimarzios. Not because they are cheaper, but because I think they sound better. If you want a better pickup at a good price, then check out BG Pickups. The BG Bucker Dark is my favorite pup ever.

Yeah, I dig those prices. What guitars have you had the Bucker Dark in?

In my experience, the high price is the only downside.
I have two A5 Warpigs and a Stockholm. I think they're all rock solid, sound great, and look awesome too.
Customer service was excellent. They answered all my questions before buying within 24 hours. And shipping was quick.
I think they all showed up about a week after I ordered them.
Maybe it depends on your style, but the Warpigs are perfect for what I do, so I love the BKP's that I've tried.

Btw, I'm a huge fan of my Tom Anderson humbuckers, so I'm pretty keen on finding another hot ceramic pickup set for the LP, but with nickel covers. Not hell-bent on ceramic, just keen.

Glad to hear the positive review on the Warpigs. I've been considering one of those for my SG-X. I agree the BK pickups look great. Definitely will get one of their exotic covers if I get the Warpig.

Currently in my LP Standard. Also had it in an Explorer in the past. The only downside is about a 6 week wait for the wind. For hot ceramics you might want to check out the Hellabucker.

Yup. Ive had multiple BKs and they do sound good, I'll take Duncan's any day.

I've only had one Duncan. I think it was a Distortion. Hated it in my SG Special. Sounded fine by itself but it was thin and lost in the mix of the metal band I was in at the time. The other guitarist (Mr. Willy here on RT) had a Tom Anderson HN3+ in his Hamer explorer. I played his guitar that day and immediately ordered my own HN3+.

I have tried and liked many different pickup makes and I have many BKPs in different guitars.

Price is from UK small scale manufacturing + exchange rate + customs/shipping

What I find special about BKP, besides the excellent customer service and direct contact with Tim Mills, the owner, is that they don't just have a sound, but they have depth, extreme dynamics and versatility. Indeed a pickup must match a guitar, which is why I would always recommend to contact Tim upfront stating the type of guitar/woods, current pickups and what you don't like about them. He will recommend a set that usually is a great match - and if not he will exchange it for another set.

As for the pickups, they just sing. With production Duncans or DiMarzios, I find that they can sound great, but they sound the same on two notes or two chords if you hit them, whereas with a BKP, every micro change in pick angle or picking velocity will yield a slightly different voice. As a result, you can produce much more lively tones than with a mass production product IMO. Maybe it's a bit like the difference between a modeler and a real amp. There is just something to it that you feel and hear when you dig in that makes the real thing more desirable.

they are very expensive here in the UK too compared to other brands, shipping something so small shouldn't really add to the cost.

interestingly they tend to go for around £60 used on forums, compared to around £40 for SD and dimarzio

for my money Suhr Aldrich every time...

I've never really worried about the price or thought it was too out of line from other boutique pups. I'm in Canada so pretty well everything gets taxed and dutied. Axe Palace has consistently good pricing on this pups, and I have also ordered direct from overseas.

I like how they sound, I love the quality in build, and I really appreciate the hands-on customer support and integrity of the company.

If they sound like shit, could be any number of things. If they're too expensive, don't buy 'em.
