6 string, 26.5 scale, current tuned to A (sometimes standard, other times drop A). Ebony neck and board, Alder body with poplar top

I have been chasing a few pickups in it and have yet to find “the one”. I suspect some of this is coming down to needing to dial in pickup height (direct mounted so can be a pain) and also mistakenly going after brighter pickups to counterbalance the lower tuning (but may be the wrong direction given the scale length’s tendency to be naturally brighter).

Just installed a BKP Impulse in the bridge…doesn’t seem to be it either…will give it some more time and work on the height some, but any out there that you swear by for extended scale length?

Wish I could help but since it's a 6 I'm curious to see what others suggest. Maybe a ceramic Nailbomb or Warpig for the A tuning I would suggest if it was a 7.

I don't think there's any special requirements for a Baritone. If anything, they are a tad bit clearer with the extra tension.

DiMarzio FRED and MoJoe kick butt with baritones. Clarity for days but never icepicky, great punchy musical mids and tight low end that never overpowers or gets bloated/farty.

Definite tonal differences with 250K and 500K pots.

I swear by those pickups, and I never swear at them. :rawk: Good luck in your search, man.

I find that in those tunings, unless you are going for a really hifi sound or using super heavy gauges and a shorter scale, I generally want a really mid forward pickup. It’s much easier to then remove some nasal quality of that pickup with eq than deal with something that come through as scooped or even anemic.

It all depends on the sound you want and the guitar you have, but I have liked:
Hapas Behemoth
Black Winter but lower the height a bit for more clarity
Dunable slugwolf if going for less clarity

Regardless of trying any of those, I’d certainly give something with a reasonably high output mid push a shot. Likely Alnico V.

Good luck!

This one is high on my list. Just installed an Alnico Black Heaven in one of my Dunable R2s and it is *chefs kiss* perfection

Good
Actually just pulled the Black Winter out, but I think your point on height is incredibly salient and what I was really overlooking. Have a Dunable Hellworm on hand too, but was left pretty flat by it in the R2 it came out of. Granted, it might be the right match for the extended scale length
What are you looking for exactly? Less brightness? More mids?

The Impulse is pretty neutral sounding so it might just amplify what you don't like about the guitar.
Honestly, probably looking for unobtanium. Clarity and attack for the lower strings with out being sharp across the spectrum

In fairness to the impulse, I need to give it more time and play with the height more. It is very clear, but comes across as boxy and there is almost a single coil like sharpness/clanginess to it. I think that is a combo of height and scale length that I am still working to dial out
